...another "celebrity chef" Anthony Bourdain was zipping along the US/Mexico border on a 1200GS on last night's episode of "No Reservations". I've heard some refer to him as an obnoxious prick, but I like the way he travels- eating like a local and I like his commentary.

"No Reservations" is on the Travel Channel.

"No Reservations" is on the Travel Channel.

I think that perception of Anthony is dependant upon the episode of which ever show he is in. I have seen some where I quickly change the channel and others where I have watched the same episode at least twice. Personally, though, I much prefer Alton's sense of humour.

I try not to miss Tony's show. He reminds me of Elliot Gould of the Altman movie version of M*A*S*H. Lots of that New York attitude, but his love for odd and unique cuisine shines through.

I think both the Ghana and Ireland episodes showed Tony at his most open and humane. Yeah, I know, it's the episodes where he gets snarky that you remember most. Especially when he ends up with some real, uhh, interesting, material. Like the tasty Icelandic treat -- shark preserved by the magic of putrefaction! And you can't miss his Namibia episode -- ostrich egg and dirt omelettes, and you don't wanna know about the pork!

Here's two you should look out for.

Hairy Bikers-two northern English guys who ride around the world eating and cooking whatever the locals have. Genuinely enthusiastic blokes, the Isle of Man on monkey bikes is a must see. Check the BBC website

Two Fat Ladies-two fat ladies of a certain age and suitably proper upbringing, travelled the UK on a Triumph and sidecar rig. Their speciallity was all the food that's really bad for you, lots of cream sauces, cooked in lard and usually enough alcohol to drown a goat. They also had a passion for killing whatever they ate themselves, very shotgun based menu.
One of them died, probably of blocked arteries.
Again BBC.

Both have a certain authenticity that I find missing in the Anton show which seems over scripted-somehow the one liner appear rehearsed, although I'll still watch. Bourdain, I've caught a few in passing-he's okay but not bike orientated.

Watch a Hairy Bikers and you'll see what I mean. My heroes!

Yeah I saw it. I haven't yet been put off by his TV appearances, but I have found that Bourdain's books are quite good. In any case, he reminds me not to lose sight of travel ambitions. I really would enjoy being able to eat my way around the world (although I might skip the putrified foods).

I think it's worth noting how much interest there seems to be within the MC community for cooking. More than just "Where's the best place to eat?" there appears to be a genuine enthusiasm for getting in the kitchen and making stuff. Messing around in the kitchen is certainly one of my hobbies.

Well, traveling and eating go pretty well together. I mean most traveling motorcyclists
think a couple of hundred miles for breakfast isn't too unusual :D

I've always been interested in cooking and almost always have enjoyed knowing what
goes into my food too...

If you didn't pick up on the link earlier,

www.hairybikers.com (http://www.hairybikers.com)

My ultimate biking foodies, they are covering India, Argentina and somewhere else I can't remember. They've already ridden and cooked in Namibia, Viet Nam, Mexico, Isle of Man, Transylvania, Belgium, Turkey and other places...all on the site

and you couldn't wish to meet to more grounded blokes, just out for fun, food and riding delight.

I don't think the Hairies have made it to the States' TV screens yet, but I'm sure they'd be an instant hit.

Did you see the video clip in the site's e-cards?

I watched it also. Not very atgatt was he. I loved the choices in food he tried and where he tried them. Getting home cooked Mexican food is the absolute best, not some prepackaged gunk wrapped in a tortilla and served with salsa on the side. The Mexican family who's kids also turned out to be sushi chefs was kind a neat for a cross over in food.

It's in the current (July) issue of ON, page 66.
