Here is a nest being built in my helmet.

I have a mpg of the birds flying in and out of the helmet but I cannot upload to smugmug and it cannot be attached here.

I would take that to be a message from which ever higher power you ascribe to to get a new helmet.:)

One spring I picked up my wife's helmet to find the mice had used the lining and foam to make a nice sheltered nest.

This is not a old helmet that was sitting around. It is less than a year old. I had stopped in Luckenbach. I placed my helmet on my gas tankapproximately 20 minutes before I found the birds busy building a nest. People were walking by.

I wish I could upload the mpg file.

15,000 a year is not often enough. :brow

I don't think anyone understands that this occurred while I was on a ride and stopped in Luckenbach for approx 30 minutes. During that time, the birds were flying in and out of my helmet which I placed on my bike's gas tank. People were walking by. I had to distrub their nest building to leave.

Iwish I could upload the mpg file.

email me the file. I will upload it to YouTube and then we can post it here. It will be a learning experience for us both. I have never uploaded to YouTube before.

Oh, that's just a great video! The still picture is neat, too, but the video really shows the "process." :clap

"I Predict A Riot"

Watching the people get lairy
It's not very pretty I tell thee
Walking through town is quite scary
It's not very sensible either
A friend of a friend he got beaten
He looked the wrong way at a policeman
Would never of happened to Smeaton
An old leodensian
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
I tried to get to my taxi
The man in a tracksuit attacks me
He said that he saw it before me
And wants to get things a bit gory
Girls scrabble round with no clothes on
To borrow a pound for a condom
If it wasn't for chip fat they'd be frozen
they're not very sensible
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
And if there's anybody left in here
That doesn't want to be out there
Watching the people get lairy
It's not very pretty I tell thee
Walking through town is quite scary
It's not very sensible
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
And if there's anybody left in here
That doesn't want to be out there
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
I predict a riot
I predict a riot

Sheesh. I'm such a sucker for birds, my bike and helmet would probably be there until the little ones had left the nest. :)

What can you say? Birds dig Beemers.

I got this picture a few days ago, in Port Angeles, WA. We were packing up to catch the morning ferry to Vancouver Island, and I walked down to the ferry terminal to buy tickets and find out what the deal was for putting bikes on the boat. On my way back to the hotel, I found this little guy sitting in the road next to a storefront with a big plate-glass window, obviously stunned.

He's a Gold-Crowned Kinglet (Regulus satrapa). We get them in our neighborhood frequently, and we usually get at least one a summer smacking into a window. They don't move very fast, so they mostly just get dazed. Usually all it takes is about 5-10 minutes of the bird collecting its wits in a safe spot (i.e. not in the road) before it moves on to the next activity. I carried this one the two blocks back to the bikes and let him catch his breath on my handgrip. I snapped a couple of pictures, went back to packing up, and eventually he flew away.
