As I prepare for an extended tour on my 2000 R1100RT this summer, I test drove the new 1200RT and was really wowed. It really isn't just the sixth gear.
However, as I began to read about the need for a bike specific battery charger and got what I felt were super high quotes from a dealer on the installation of options (lights,plug-ins etc.) which involved wiring, I began to worry that I would be totally dependent on dealer service on all such matters.
Anyone knowledgeable able to comment?

By using a fuse block and bypassing the CANbus you have nothing to worry about.
A fuse block (Centech, Blue Sea, etc.) can be optionally triggered anywhere off of a CANbus connected device such as the accessory outlet, diagnostic plug or any one of the lights.
A Powerlet iCAN harness can be used to connect an accessory outlet directly to the battery so any battery compatible charger can be used.
Autoswitch is another option for turning off/on accessories such as lights. They are coming out with a CANbus-compatible switch this Spring.

According to my dealer, as long as you connect directly to the battery (and no, you don't have to disconnect or remove it from bike), a standard Battery Tender works fine!
