Garmin Vista - Topo Maps versus back roads and trails map

Does anybody play with topographic map programs and GPS by chance please? I am looking for some feedback as to how they work on GPS in real life, and also if they indeed reveal otherwise non-published trails not found on more commonly supplied programs.
