The questions that get asked here.

This one most definitely generated a snicker.

I have no idea why it smells so awful. Though I cannot say that I make it a habit to go around sniffing lubricants. :D

Mark, next time you feel like heading over this way, we'll enjoy a good cigar or two, and it will help banish the smell of the lubes.

The reason "normal" gear oil smells is due to the sulfur compounds in it.

The reason synthetic does is the same reason; the base is a synthetic oil, but it still contains the sulfur compounds; at least, SOME do. There may be a few synthetics without them, but I can't find any. For example:

"Valvoline High Performance Synthetic Gear Oil is a superior sulfur-phosphorus extreme pressure gear lubricant formulated with premium basestocks and additives to provide excellent performance."

From: http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/product_detail.asp?product=121

Also from Mobile 1 (http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_Synthetic_Gear_Lubricant_LS_75W-90.asp):

"Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 combines wax-free synthesized hydrocarbon base oils and a specially designed extreme-pressure, limited-slip, sulfur-phosphorous additive system to provide a significantly higher level of performance in rear axles and differentials versus conventional fluids. I like the smell in the garage. This time of year it means spring maintenance is under way or done. I always make sure I spill a little on the floor.
.
The sulfur is good, it makes seals swell nicely.

In 1976 my friend Gary and myself took a trip out west in a '69 Firebrid, straight 6, overhead cam 4 barrel, 4 speed. On the way back the clutch release bearing went bad. We pick up a bearing somewhere in North Dakota and when we got to Hancock Mi we changed the bearing at a friend’s house. Under the car gear oil leaked out as we removed the drive shaft and trans. Till this day I will never forget the sight of Gary's blond hair dripping gear oil and I believe I still smell it when I'm around him.

The smell never goes away.
