Okay, after looking through this site and AdvRider for tips on aux lights I've came up with a mystery.

Got an 04 GS 1150, and while reviewing I noticed that the owners maintenance manual has listed a 'Code plug Motronic' relay, with a picture of it in place as well. However my bike doesn't have this (and since I bought it new it never did unless it was unknowingly removed during a shop trip).

On the AdvRider archive site this is mentioned in relation to 'surge' a problem I still have, even though it's dual plug, did the valve adjust, twin max, etc..

Can anyone shed light on this subject? Should my bike have had this relay? :violin

You mean a Coding Plug for the Motronic computer. Its not a relay, but a series of different "shorts" depending on the plug in question. Each Coding Plug case is colored a different color for identification and they are matched to different markets, models.

There is also a "Low Octane" plug just for that purpose and its only to be used on a temporary basis; one tank full and then while running another tank of mid-grade/super though the engine.

Neither my 2003 or 2004 R1150 GS Adventures surge (both are 2 Spark models) or have ever surged. Thats why I held off buying an oilhead after test riding one in 2001...it surged mildly.

Are both ignition systems working?

Thanks for the response Alex.

I've had the surge ever since I bought it new. I took it to two different dealers several times and neither could solve the issue. I did the AdvRider valve setting and used a twinmax to tune it up and it was better but it's still there.

In the service manual there's a picture of the fuse box showing the 'Coding Plug Motronic' in place and on the service disc I have it's also shown and listed as such.

From the photo's I have everything else; fuses, Motronic relay, Horn relay, ABS, etc., but the piece listed as the 'Coding Plug Motronic' in both manuals is simply not present in my fuse box. Seemed very odd to me that it's now present when both maintenance manuals showed it as an item. Maybe some models shipped without but it seems a strange coincidence.

It's clipped to Your air box lid. At least thats where Mine is. Its a large round cylidrical looking thing with a rubber cover over the plug end. Otherwise known as the diagnostic plug? Just guessing. I have looked in the manual I have and can't find anything labeled "coding plug" but You've got My couriosity!:wave

Nope, the cylinder on the air box is not what I'm talking about. Got some answers from some folks on AdvRider and it seems that some bikes indeed ship without this plug although for the life of me I don't understand why.

Apparently it serves the function of adjusting the richness of the fuel, low octane gas etc, by using different 'code plugs'. I'm going to talk with the dealer about it.

OK, have a look at the pic of "my" fuse box on my R1150 GS Driving Light Relay & AutoSwitch Install (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8669) article. Scroll down to the top view of my fuse box. I believe the empty white socket is for my Motronic Coding Plug and also my Low Octane Coding Plug.

That slot has always been empty on both my 2-Spark Adventures. Note that my oilheads are Canadain models. Note I also have 9 fuses instead of the 7 listed in the service manual.

Thanks for the info Alex. Seems that your's didn't have this either but yet no problem surging.... I think I'll give the one connection listed for the 1150GS a go and see if it makes any difference.

Just got done with adding my IPF lights so now I can go check it out.

Just finished putting IPF lights on the GS. Wanted to say a big thanks to everyone on the forum here for all the past posts with 'how to do it' info; great help :)

Thought I'd show my shot at it. Went down to the hardware and bought a small piece of aluminum, cut it to width for the Centech and IPF relay, and bent it so it cleared the air box sensor plug (used the two existing screws to mount to airbox).
Mounted the Centech upside down so that the battery attach didn't get in the way of the relay mount on the left side. Worked out pretty good. IPF sends a nice wiring harness with their lights but all the wires way to long (made for car) so I had to shorten.

Looking forward to a brighter night!

My 06 1150 GSA did not come with the plug either and I have been running 87 octane with an ocasional 89 tankfull for the last 20K miles without any issues at all. :dunno
The bike runs fine on all the gas pumped into it thusfar and no surging either. The motronic is the 2.4 issue also. I have 'experimented' with different sparkplugs but find the BMW dealer supplied ones the best so far. YMMV
