Folks, Just installed a garmin streetpilot 3 gps on my 06r1200gs. Picked up power/ground from the onboard socket just behind/under the seat on the left. Worked fine on the day trip with numerous stops. (as far as I could tell).
When I parked in the (dark) garage, the gps stayed on (as it should for 15 minutes). But after about one minute it should off and the front and rear parking lights start flashing about 4 times an second. Pulling the plug in the onboard socket makes the flashing stop. I checked furthur and this happens if the gps is on or if it is off..
Any ideas?

i cant say anything about what you might have done, but i can recommend just wiring to the battery. that's how i've got mine hooked up and i've got no issues.

I agree. With Canbus equipped bikes it is best to hook ALL add-on accessories directly to the battery. This avoids a number of issues and simplifies life greatly. Every 12v+ wire from the battery should have an appropriate sized fuse for the wire size and load.

If you have to have switched power then maybe you can get away switching a relay from a switched 12v wire - but maybe not - depending on the wire that gets picked.

Right, I have mine wired like this:

Now with a Centech Fuse Box relayed off the diagnostic plug.

I like Jim's set up, though I went with a CanBus Helper. It uses the accessory outlet's power to power up a relay that supplies power to four fused pairs of spade connectors. The added advantage is that you can run higher amperage accessories than the CanBus will allow.

Tourtech makes and sells them. Click here to see (http://www.touratech-usa.com/shop/show.lasso?sku=044-0450&-session=touratech:0E6F3506D9750DED97ED311209F780B1 ), but don't say I didn't warn you. Touratech is heaven and hell. They have so many cool things that will make you drool, but half of them never seem to see the light of day for seemingly permanent backorder.

Thanks, Jim. Looks like your comments about Touratech are right on since the status of the item is "backordered". Since all I really need the power source for is for an Autocomm unit, I think I'll just use the existing accessory plug which is also switched off the ignition.

PS. Looking forward to your DVD!

It's a Touratech part, like Jim says. MrsK bought it for me for Christmas at Marin BMW.

Actually there are 2 different CANbus helpers from Touratech.

This one shuts everything connected to it off when you are starting the bike. i.e. key on = accessories on, key off = accessories off link (http://www.touratech-usa.com/shop/show.lasso?SKU=044-0450&-session=touratech:8229B0A3818FFC20BE9B18F71B0D332A )

And the SSR module that avoids this by holding 1 minute delay while the motorcycle starter is being used etc. link (http://www.touratech-usa.com/shop/show.lasso?SKU=044-0690&-session=touratech:8229B0A3818FFC20BE9B18F71B0D332A )

I'm now the owner of an R12GSA!

I wanted to have Piaa 510s added to switch on and off with the high beam lights. The dealer service tech says this can't be done, that even adding a relay to the high beam circuit will cause the Canbus to show a fault.

Reading here, it looks like it is being done. I also want to do the same with brake and tail lights, adding more.

I understand the concept of adding completely separate circuits for those lights. Is the Canbus really that sensitive to intrusion by a relay? Am I missing something?

There's a GPS power source on your steering column. You can buy a BMW adaptor for $23 and power your GPS with it. It is a switched source.

Don't ask me how I know but, if you try to add a relay to the headlight power, contact me so that I can tell you how to reset your headlights (or at least what I had to do to get mine going again).

Kbasa, where did you get the helper?

I used the Touratech this time, simply for convenience, but this link will show you all the parts you need to make your own fused power strip. I added a little project box that I was able to velcro the strip to (the lid) and drilled holes in the ends for wires to go into, then zip tied the lid shut. The photos on the page are an FJR installation.

This photo shows the Touratech "Canbus Helper", along with a bunch of stuff attached to it. Once I'm done with the farkles, I'll clean it all up with zip ties. The red "pistol" is a modified power supply for the Roady, so it can be hard wired into the Helper.

Lone Star BMW-Triumph in Austin had the Helper in stock. Wonderful people.

You can use the same metal strip to create a clean ground block, with just one good wire going to the battery, all your farkles grounded to the strip. Doing that solved some noise problems I was having on the FJR...I dunno why, but it did.

Hope this is useful.
