Last year I bought a used '03 R1150RS with 12,000 miles. It came with a Remus aftermarket muffler installed, but the dealer also provided me with the stock muffler. I noticed later that the previous owner, in the process of installing the Remus, felt compelled to bang up the underside of the muffler to make room for the centerstand to fold away. I can only imagine that this isn't good for the airflow, and the bike backfires on occasion. I am thinking about removing the Remus and replacing it with the stock exhaust. Looks to me like all I need to do is remove a few fasteners and an O2 sensor and connect up the stock muffler and tailpipe. I don't have a lot of tools or experience working on bikes. Is this simple, or am I getting in over my head? Any advice would be appreciated!

It really is that simple. The only part you may have an issue with is the O2 sensor as they sometimes do not want to come out.

Otherwise it is a very straightforward swap.

That said, if you expect to eliminate a little popping on decelleration you will be disapointed. That is the nature of the beast. The lean burn technology necessary to pass emmisions testing has that side effect.

Mac:

It will probably still backfire when you install the stock exhaust; oilers are programmed to run really lean, and they will backfire on trailing throttle. You can probably get it out with careful tuning.

I would leave the Remus on unless it looks unsightly from normal sight angles.
The stock system is a boat anchor, and your oiler will end up whining like a Porsche.

Could you elaborate on the banged up muffler part? The pre muffler or resonator come from the factory with a depressed area to allow a close fit to the center stand. It's not molded, it's pushed in and looks like angular creases. Unless you see individual little hammer marks, it comes that way from Remus. I have the same system on my 99RT. It sounds quite nice too!

Are you hearing popping or backfiring like a shotgun? I'm guessing it's popping which is not that unusual especially when the they run very lean with factory settings.

Hiya,

I've got an 02 1150RS with the titanium Remus. No premuffler, just the crossover pipe. To make things just perfect I put in the Rheinwest Chip. Best mod I ever did. Well, the Ohlins front and read were the other. Power all over the place and handles like a razor blade. Stay with the Remus.
