While reading the minutes of the board of directors meeting held in November, I came accoss this line: "In conjunction with the rally, Sue hopes to have a track day at Road America." Just curious if any progress has been made on that front. The track day at mid-Ohio durring the Lima rally was a blast. I'm sure there are lots of us who would love to do it again.
Anybody heard anything?
Sue?...

Wasn't the track at Lima a dirt one, and a circle?
I think it would be GREAT if we could have one at Road America, Road America (RA) is a great track! But make sure people under 18 can ride too!!!!
Nate will be at Road America July 6th! Just to let you know. (I'm planning on going)

I've been warned not to get my hopes up. It seems there may be other events already scheduled for the track that week. :cry

For those of you even thinking about taking time to experience a 'track day' at Road America in Elkhart Lake, definitely put it on your schedule!
Having lived in Sheboygan County (adjacent to Washington Co., site of the 2007 Rally), I am quite familar with this resource.
Additionally, having been in law enforcement for over three decades in this area, we did our EVOC (Evasive Vehicle Operation Course) training on the track, and it is an awesome path to negotiate.
Make time for this opportunity, and enjoy the ride of your life!:wave

Since there will be a track day, I have to decide what to bring. The BMW R1100S, or the Suzuki SV650...
.. hmm making it even harder. :P

Tough choice! I've heard great things about the SV650S. I've been thinking about buying a used one as the prices seem very reasonable. I'm sure either way, you'll have a great time.

I live about 10 minutes from Road America and it's a great track. Two years ago my son and I did a 2 day Sporttracktime event there and we were the only BMW'S on the track. I had my 2004RT on the track with 600 miles on it. Put it through the paces to see what it would do. Beat my son on the straights and he got me in the corners. He races bikes and I used to race so it was fun. They remodeled somewhat this year so should be fun again. I highly recommened it if we can get it.

Wouldn't I look silly on my R12RT with so little time on it. But then again, how often does one get to run Road America?

So, ride anyway. A chance to get used to the RT in a closed course!

In October of last year, I had the chance to ride "The Dragon" north of Deal's Gap in North Carolina with my '05 R1200RT.
After 318 curves in 11 miles, trust me - you can really enjoy an R1200RT in the twists and turns of the Road America track, which I have driven many times on four wheels.
I have ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) and found the 'normal' setting more responsive than the 'sport' one when it came to wearing off my 'chicken strips,' as my riding buddy characterized my sidewalls.
Looking forward to July!:wave

Sounds like fun.
Do you need anything special for a track day- other than normal ATGATT- like leathers or safety wired parts, etc.

It would be better if you could get a full face helmet that DOES NOT open up in the front. I've heard from some friends who race, and do corner working (longer then me) who has seen the flip up helmets, flip up during a crash.

Every track day has their own rules. Usually it is no mirrors and taped over lights.

I got a flyer from SportBikeTrackTime about the track event to be held during the rally - Friday the 13th - how appropriate.
Anyone know how we signup? With STT or is this part of rally registration?
I checked the STT website and the BMW sponsored day looks to be $80-100 more than other days at the same track that week. Are we required to send a royalty to Der Vaterland?

The MOA has no control over this event. We worked with SportBikeTrackTime so they would offer this during the same week as our rally.
I suspect (don't know for sure) that the cost of renting this track may have something to do with the final cost, but would only be guessing.

Sue - Thanks for the track day details. I think many of the things included on your list are extras at the regular events - buy your own lunch, pay for your CD, etc.
It's great to have this as part of the Rally. RA is a world class track.
Note: Anybody attending needs to make sure their tires and brakes are in great shape. It is a very fast track. Potential to hit Vmax three times in one lap.

They know some of the BMW motorcylist will pay for the track day even if the price $300. So, they up the price because they know we will pay for it... Well, I'll wait and take a track day a MAM (Mid American Motorplexplex) or MPH (Motorsport Park Hastings)... no way I'm paying twice as much for this event. Especially when I can go through the SAME people, the day before or after, and pay only $145...
I'm sure I would have more fun anyways with-out all the BMW's. I'm sure they would get mad at me for passing them all the time :nyah

If in fact they are jacking up the price to "take advantage" there isn't a whole lot that can be done.
Having said this the rally chair or Executive Director *can* contact them and clearly state that along with any event publicity generated we will make sure that everyone knows about the *special* pricing so our members can make an informed decision.
The minute I think somone is charging a premium because they percieve that I will spend more because I ride a roundel is the end of their chances to get any of my hard earned $$'s.

The cheapest thing about a BMW is the owner!!!
I'll drink to that!! :drink
Monte Lutz just sent me this reply to my inquiry about his pricing structure:
Allow me to share:
It is a two group format vs. a three group format so the riders get a full 30-minutes of riding per hour vs. 20 minutes. This also provides for a more relaxed day as a rider can actually come in, chat with an instructor and go back out in the same session.
We are including a photo CD for every rider ($40 value) and an upgraded lunch.
Friday is a prime day which is more money to rent the facility than a Mon-Thursday.
We are keeping the group sizes smaller than we do for sportbikes because we feel that these folks would rather ride with a lower track density.
Lastly - The Monday and Tuesday events are subsidized buy Kawasaki and Ducati respectively.
We want to make sure that these guys and gals get a premium experience. This is not a "turn em loose and hope for the best" event, it includes instruction and on-track coaches.
BTW - Reg Pridmore's Road America events were $395 and didn't include lunch or photo CD.
Hope that helps.

BMW subsidized a track day at the Trenton Rally.
Having said this the track day above seems like a better deal then their regular sessions so the price increase is not entirely unjustified.
Thanks Sue for getting the real story.

Monte, Bonnie and all the folks from Sportbike Track Time did a fantastic job at Mid Ohio in 'O5. I can't wait to go again. The groups were small and well organized, the coaching was excellent and the individual intstruction has fantastic. This one day did more to improve my riding than anything before or since. The thirty minute sessions were another bonus.
I also participated in the track day at Trenton. Yes it was free but you get what you pay for. I remember waiting all morning for my 3 track sessions of 15 minutes each. My group went out over an hour later than scheduled and there was no coaching or intruction to speak of other than "stay behind your group leader."
If you just want to ride around a track, it may not be worth it for you. If you really want to learn and improve you riding, $275 is a bargain! I plan on being there in July.

Track days here in the Bay Area are right around $300, so this is a good value, I think.
Now I have to figure out how to get the BoD meeting scheduled so I can go. :ha

I think it is great that we are having a track day during the Rally. I have been to a few track days at the Jolit track with my 2005 RT. It is great fun to be on the track with your bike. The track day people check the bike and you race suits, etc.. Your tires must have 80 % rubber left. If you do not meet the standards you can not go on the track. You will not get a refund!! You can check the web site sportbiketracktime.com.
