you don't NEED a TV, i lived without one for 8 years. however, you do need a GPS.

also, a proper television should cost about 2K, not including your audio gear. so the GPS makes good financial sense too.

seems like a simple decision to me.

i don't have tv,

but i do like having a way to watch my netflix

i've been cable/tv free for a while now

i'm getting sick of curling up watching movies on a 13" mac book.

and i HATE big expensive tvs, when did people think spending that much on a television was suddenly acceptable??? i want nothing bigger than 27"

I felt the same and had a 27". Then finally I buckled and I popped for the 42" Toshiba HD here in my home office.
Nize.
I can watch movies and work and give you good folks grief all at once.

I do like the GPS on my RT. And it was quite a bit more than $499.

Ok, shutting up now.

You gotta be kidding. I don't understand anyone who spends thousands on home entertainment. Jeez it's just TV. Get a $300 tube tv and be done with it. If you need the big screen experience, go to a movie theatre.

Can't put HD TV on a bike. Besides not matter how much you spend on a TV the reruns are deja vous all over again. Read books from library - free :thumb

Sometimes programming can surprise you. Watching crash science motorcycles on National Geographic. Keep a watch for this program. Very instructive information about tires, bike design, helmet design, Laguna Seca and high speed racing. Lots of very instructive high side footage.

i'm not kidding in the least. i take an opposite view - if i choose to have TV, i want it to be amazing. i lived happily without one for a long time. then i thought, "i guess i'll get a tv now" and i bought a biggish one. i want a big screen, an immersive experience, and excellent audio. i want good contrast, high resolution and accurate colors. the content that i enjoy watching (sports and netflix movies like bubba) are best in high definition with 5.1 audio.

the movie theater has commercials, people talking, people chewing pocorn like cows, and if i want to pause the film to take a leak i have to pull the fire alarm.

Agreed, I spent much more for the big tube Toshiba I have in the "media room" than I did for the Toshiba 42 HD plasma. That was almost 10 years ago. Eventually I will replace the big tube but for now I spend much more time here in my home office than I do out in the "media room". I have a 5.1 system out there, in here I go with a dual system, the old stereo system I used to have on the 'puter here before I upgraded to a 5.1 Logitech system for the 'puter. BTW, the Logictech systems are not too expensive if you poke around on the 'net. So in here if I want to watch movies in 5.1 I can launch them on the 'puter and watch them on a 21" tube but generally I forego that to watch the 42" plasma. I may pop a blue-ray or HD player in here eventually but that would assume I rent or buy video CD's and quite frankly (and not to condone such activities) with BitTorrent and all that's available for download who spends money to rent or buy anymore?

The Toshiba 42" was $1499, it's a nice piece but prices are falling as we dialogue so you may want to wait. I cannot justify spending $400 on old technology but that's just me.

The 2730 for $399 (http://www.jandhproducts.com/product.asp?pf_id=Garmin_Streetpilot_2730_GPS). <- Check it out

So what's the catch?

From the website:

If you are looking for a BRAND NEW 2730 and don’t have an XM radio subscription or don't plan on purchasing one then this is your chance to get a tremendous deal on a BRAND NEW 2730..

You can choose to buy this unit without the GXM 30 antenna! Just select it from the drop-down menu when ordering. Of course, if you still want the complete unit, that option is available also.

Are these GPS units water resistant? I mean, we're mounting them on bikes that will inevitably get wet.

My eTrex Legend is designed for marine use, but it recently took a dump. :hungover I'm not going to pay for it to be repaired if I can get a new one for $400.

These units are variants of the Nav III sold by BMW for much more money. The ones sold by BMW do have another panel on the left with button to make it easier to access the controls.

They should be fine for motorcycle use but I would still have a rain bonnet for it. I like the Zummo 550 but it requires the XM antenna probably another $200. And in either case there is the matter of the mount - $70 to $100 more.

But the Zummo has the advanced chip set.

Decisions, decisions. :banghead

They are waterproof to some NMEA standard. They work just fine on motorcycles, no need to cover them up. I think I may have found my new GPS... while not real happy with Garmin support, I have not found anything out there I'd consider better. Thanks for the links!

I have a Garmin Quest mounted on my F650CS and K75S. Internal batteries will run it for about 2 days before recharging. Very waterproof and shock resistant. I made shock absorbing mounts. Batteries allow programming without external power. The Quest 1 only holds about 3 states of maps and needs a PC to download them. The Quest 2 holds all the U.S. and Canada. Seems to be slower than the Quest 1 though.

A friend just bought a 2720 and I think the Quest is more versatile and easier to use. No touch screen so it can be changed with gloves. Also, small enough to be easily removed when parked and put into your pocket. No power connection to worry about.

Just to chime in on this.
I picked mine up after seeing the thread that Home Shopping Network had them on their website for $499.00. Have had my hands on it now for about 2 weeks. Played with it at home a bit. Currently I'm in LA, and now can see just how incredible this thing really is. Accurate and easy to navigate. I wasn't sure the voice prompts would work, but I think I may even be falling in love with the woman that lives inside this thing. She doesn't get mad when I go off route. She just tells me how to recover and get back on track without judgement or attitude. :heart

As for waterproof-ness, Garmin says yes , but I would venture to say splash proof just by looking at it. Since the audio speaker is NOT built in, it can take some water and moisture. If you're looking at any GPS with a built-in speaker, it's not recomended on a bike since the speaker grill will allow water into the unit. Also this unit will report Altitude for nerds like me who just want to know.

FWIW I may be easy to impress on this topic, since this is my first GPS upgrade since my 1st Gen StreetPilot from 7 years ago.

Decisions, decisions. :banghead

boy, i'll say!

i got into the gps thing ~10 years ago, ancient history... when nothing was integrated/automatic. i also walked 20 miles to school barefoot in the snow.

deal is, i have spent *way* too much money on this stuff.

so, i have stuck with my garmin V for too many years, but my eyes are going bad (good *god* i am getting old!) and can't see the screen as well as i'd like, and can't deal with the slow processor or just 19 meg of ram anymore.

all the xm-based bells and whistles don't impress me (well, i would go with the weather radar display if it wasn't so expensive) so the only thing i am really holding out for at this point is a unit that has *all* the detail for the entire country (and canada, please) without having to deal with data cards... for far less than a thousand bux.

the 2730 just doesn't do it for me.... too bulky for my dirt bikes... although, the garmin 276C is looking tempting.....

I almost ordered the 2730 and then my brain said, "Remember Moore's Law" and be patient. I have a NAVII which serves my needs very well and I move it into the car when I travel to Florida. The BMW units have those nice big buttons on the left.

ZUMO? For the price it should have XM included. Add $200 bucks to price.

2720 - cheap but no XM

2730 - Seems great but no buttons on left but could probably take the accessory off the NAVII.

NAVIII would be the best but just a bit pricey at the moment. So the real answer is

Patience, patience, patience.

Costco has the 2730 on sale for $499. That includes the XM, so it seems like a better price, but I'm not in the market, yet. Will probably get around to getting one when I am able to do more long distance riding. With teen age kids, I tend to stay closer to home, since I remember the stupid stuff I did as a teen!

How about portable XM and then one of those 2730s without the XM.

Save some dollars
Get best of both and then some.
