HA! You thought this was going to be something dirty didn't you?

Sooner or later, even the most devout of the loyal two-wheeled followers turns to the dark side...the cage...the scourge of the twisty two-laner...hinderance to forward progress...the AUTOMOBILE. So, when it's time to pick up the kids and their miscreant friends...or there's 3 feet of snow on the ground...or that keg for your SuperBowl party...what do you drive? Where do you put your "my other car is a motorcycle" bumper sticker?

My wife drives a Chevy HHR. Her "motorcycle" is a 1987 Fiero GT with some minor go-fast modifications.

I drive a big black Jeep Commander. For those who think the Commander is just a big soccer-mom/dad Jeep put those thoughts in the trash bin.

The commander is most definitely trail-rated as Jeep claims. I know because I've beat the crap out of it up and down sand dunes and it hasn't gotten stuck in the same sections where I buried my old Z-71 Silverado.

2007 Ford Ranger FX4-Level II (the 4x4 offroad ranger with the BFG 31"x10.5" tires - NICE!)

This replaced my 2003 Ranger FX4 which had no mechanical problems, but was going to need brakes and maintenance items. I now save that money, and my monthly payment dropped.

I also have a 1951 Ford F-1 in the garage, still disassembled. It's going to be a "stock on the outside, upgraded on the inside" vehicle. No chopped top or lowered suspension, for me. It has a Mustang-II IFS, 9" 3.55 rear (with traction bars), a 4-speed "toploader" tranny, and a built 390. I love the stock look, but want the extra power and better suspension. Should be a sweet ride, if I can get it finished. :)

Ok, forgive me but I own:

'95 Ford Windstar with 93K
(at the time of purchase I thought I was going to be a family type guy, never happened. Not an entirely horrible ride if you don't mind the mini-van stigma)

'95 Lincoln Continental with 43K
(legacy vehicle. was my Pop's and when he passed my Mom needed some quick cash. Not exactly what I might buy myself but . . . does the long rangers real nice, comfortable)

Working at home I put maybe 5 - 7K total split between those vehicles. Now with the R12RT, likely much less in future.

So, when ... there's 3 feet of snow on the ground...what do you drive?

Randall's history with driving fast cars is not good. Drove a TL, had a problem with flashing lights. Drove an A4, came to my senses after just one fun afternoon. So now, I drive a Grand Merc: too big to corner well, full leather and awesome acoustics.
And at least, it gets better mileage than the GMC step-side. But in a pinch, there's a Prius. Yet all told, unless I'm driving more than a couple friends, I'm annually 90/10 on two wheels.

I sometimes take my wife's A4 into the twisties on the Indian reservation west of our city, but I take no passengers......

Like Dave says, they can be just as challenging to drive as a bike. My neighbour takes his Infinity (a G35 I think) to the track. He says it's impressive, but brutal on the brakes.

2000 Toyota Tundra, practically new with 112,000 miles. We have been a Toyota family for a long time. They are so reliable, I've never had one that had many problems. The Avalon has gone trouble free for 8 years now and the Tundra 7.

In 1976 I bought a brand new Olds Cutlass. Had a 12 month 12,000 warranty at 11 months and 12, 800 miles the transmission went. Took it to the dealer and he said tough. I left it there and didn't make another payment. Swore I'd never buy another GM and went to Toyota. No regrets, except for the bad credit report. The priorities are just like a tool box: the right wrench for the right nut.
Who on earth would want to sit in the back of a Prius for a trip north up the bumpy Taconic parkway in foul 22 degree weather?
How do transport a modular back-hoe without a pickup bed? Trailer? .... I think NOT!
Why would you use a full size vehicle for snowy 10 mile commutes?

Fortunately I have a GMC pickup that I drive now. I say fortunately because my 2007 RT is still on the ocean between Deutchland and usa. I also have a Harley but it isn't operative at the moment. Sooo, in the last three weeks I went from two motorbikes to no motorbikes. Oh well, we do have some ice on our road even though there is no ice or snow on the main roads, I have to drive (ride) two and a half miles to the main road. Its also chilly right now (4 degrees) thats not wind chill, that is real time temp.

So I'm not real upset that my new bike is not here but the temp is supposed to be in the 30s later in the week and I'll be climbing the walls if it isn't here.
