Three music groups or musicians on my IPOD that most people don't know are:
Joe West- singer songwriter out of Santa Fe, available on ITunes- folksy-pop- Best songs- Human Cannonball, South Dakota hairdo
Gontiti- Japanese duo playing guitars and some great Japanese style drum works (their music just makes you happy)
Johnny Mercer- fourtime Oscar winner whose singing style is a laid back Frank Sinatra- easy to listen to, great lyrics, known more for his songwriting but great singer- Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was staged in his old house in Savannah)

Gogol Bordello (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gogol_Bordello) - if you like something a little differnt but not too far, anymore, from the mainstream, check these guys out - the lead singer also starred in Everything is Illuminated, which is also fantastic.

Paul Basile (http://barsandguitars.blogspot.com/2006/09/paul-basile.html) a quick snippet about him, and a link to his homepage - he lived in the nearby big city of Bethel for a few years or so and played with some good friends from time to time. I find his stuff pretty captivating.

Sonja Berry - no link from her and she's moved on from music to photography to who knows what now...the sound of her voice sticks with me for days each time I hear one of her songs. If you'd like a listen and can't find her anywhere (I'll be amazed if you could find her), pm me and I'll send you a track (and, yes, permission has been granted expressly to do this sort of thing).

why doesn't anyone else want to play?

Enjoyed the Paul Basile- reminds me of a young John Prine or some early sixties Dave van Ronk.
