Hi, I am looking for either a "how to" instructional book on either a silver smoke or Daytona orange paint job to restore an R90S, or advice on who to contact to get this type paint job done, including pinstriping. This is not a rush, but I am looking for authenticity as much as possible.....Gary:doh :doh

Kent does excellent work but so does Bob Wark at The Wark Shop in Ohio. He's less expensive then Kent but either one can do a correct R90/S paintjob. I've done my share but I've been out of the paint biz for several years & don't miss it.

The 'paint gurus' like Holt certainly do a great job. I had a smoke R90S restoration roll through here a year or two ago and I did talk to Kent Holt about it. However, I ended up getting a local painter to do it and I have to say the results are damned good. He never even saw a smoke R90S before; I showed him a few pictures on the internet and the very faded parts from the bike and he did the job. A very experienced BMW guy was here a few months later, looked at the parts and pronounced them true restoration quality work.
The only flaw I pick out is that whereas on the original smoke paint jobs there is some cloudiness where the silver fades to black, there is none on Ed's. This has an even smoke fade without that sort of milky transition. That cloudiness may be an artifact of the paints used at the time, I don't know. It wasn't anything that I was going to complain about but if you really need it there I'm sure Ed could create it.
I will at some point take some pictures of the bike for Ed to use on his website. For now my camera is on the fritz so I can't do much.
So I guess my point is, you may be able to get a good paint job from your local painter if you can explain the requirements well enough and he's talented enough. Or you can use Ed (I don't have any work for him now, and he'd like to do more R90Ses).

Unless things have changed I still think that Bob sends his stuff over to Kent to get pinstriped so its a toss up and I do agree that Bob is another fine painter.

I was speaking with Bob a couple weeks ago & he told me that he masks off the stripes & shoots them. He claims they come out very nice.
