Hi Folks:
I need help. I have an R90 rear drive. I need to know how to measure the amount of wear on the splines. Any help on this would be appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for your help. The links were very useful. The "Duane" link gave a very good picture of what I needed to know.

Your splines have to be rebuilt someday, vs, buying a new gearset at a monstrous price. Everybody rebuilds these, it seems. Owners, that is. You probably already have found a source for the rebuild. The amount of spline wear you can live with is subject to debate. I've seen these go past the half gone mark, that would make me worry for my personal ride. I've heard of a few that have stripped them bare and trucked the bikes home. I suspect you know the splines are questionable, or you would not be asking. I think a third of the splines gone is a good mark for the rebuild. NO more wear would keep me comfy. I did mine way back at around 100000 miles and the bike has 300000 on it now, with the rebuilt ones and "no" wear like the first set of splines. The material used is quite hard and lasts longer. The hub in the wheel is factory hub, which has to be changed as well and seems happy on my bike with the hard spline rebuild. You can rivet or bolt the wheel hub spline in place. Pick your bolts carefully. Not too soft, not too hard of a grade bolt. I've done it both ways. No problems. :thumb

Polarbear,
who re-did your rear drive splines, and what was the cost?

My 1976 R90/6 has never had any spline maintenance by me. It has only been tuned three times. Would they have done that as part of a normal tune up? The bike has only 50,000 miles. Should I stop riding it immediately and lube the splines? Please advise.:wave :wave

I lube the rear splines everytime the rear wheel is taken off. The input splines on the transmission need to be lubed every 10000 miles. I will do once every year when I am not doing alot of riding but will do this 2 or 3 time in a year when I ride a lot.
