View Full Version : Heated grips failure

I have an early release 2002 model R1150RT that blows fuses for my heated grips almost as quickly as I can replace them. I suspect it may be a routing issue with the wiring. Can anyone comment if this was a factory recognized flaw (and therefore covered by warranty) or tell me exactly where to find the damaged wires? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't it still under warranty?

Yes. My 36 months will expire 7-21-04.

Sounds like a warranty item to me.

If you want to check at home, the wires come out of the end of the grip and travel down the handlebars. If the bar-end anchor inside the handlebar was installed wrong, it will pinch the wire pretty quickly. You should be able to remove the bar-end weight and wiggle the wire to check.

BTDT when I made some heated grips for myself.
Spent quite a bit of time in the YMCA parking lot, cutting away burned wire from in the dash of my Beta RS, after the smoke escaped from in the dash....
Good thing about Betas was you could get *just* the harness that was in the fairing.
And after that incident, I worried a lot less about the electronics being fragile. I was using fuses as a diagnostic tool, then cut more wire away, new fuse, until I heard the fuel pump fire back up. Then I rode it on into work...

Hey Doug, when are you coming to visit? Let us know when you are passing thru next summer!
And yeah, the baby is plenty of fun. Here she is enjoying her new gig as a tester of H2W luggage straps.

Fair enough. It's going to be around start of July, we've got a convention in Vegas we're going to. Looks like we'll be taking g/f's CRV, with myself, g/f Sharon, and son Jean-Luc.
Blast out there, then meander home via CO and some back-country trails. Since Sharon enjoys passengering on the bike (no interest in riding her own, but will go anywhere on mine), and since Jean-Luc is only 9 y/o, have to take the car. Shrug. We'll find ways to make it fun!

Cool! She looks like a happy little kid. That's the very best kind.
