I'm sure this is a tired topic, but does anyone have advice about curing the backfiring on my 2000 R1100R. Staintune equiped - no cat. Thanks.

Option 1: Install stock exhaust system. This will definitely help.

Option 2: Make the fuel mix richer with a Techlusion or Power Commander. This might help. It should also help you realize any performance advantage the Staintune might potentially provide.

Also, just for the sake of thoroughness, make sure you don't have any leaks in the exhaust system - or the intake tubes, for that matter.

Also, when you are downshifting, make sure the throttle is all the way off as you lose speed. If I don't, my RT backfires. If I do, it doesn't.

alien- option #1 is out. i guess i need to buy a power comander. today i removed checked and cleaned the entire exhaust system and carefully cleaned the header connections to the cylinders.

thanks glwestcott for the tip regarding altering my throttle technique. it will certainly work if i can retool my hand/eye/brain.

Yeah, I find I'm still working on that myself. Actually, its kinda nice to know I can backfire on command - who knows there might be some pretty young thing that would be impressed by an old fart on an RT letting loose with some rolling backfires! Oh shoot, that comment may mean I've done to much of this :drink already and its not even dark yet. Must learn to pace myself. Must learn...:snore

Are you serious? What are you calling backfire? Please describe more fully what you are trying to alleviate. Forgive me, I'm a Harley guy, AND I KNOW BACKFIRE. My 11RSL pops a little when backing down, and frankly, I'm just glad to know it's still running! Do BMWs BACKFIRE? How do I get mine to do it? :stick

On second thought, and to be more helpful, when does it do it? Under accel, or under decel? It make a huge difference as to the diagnosis. We can fix this, just give us more info.

Just install a Staintune and you will have backfire.

I put the Staintune on my '99 R1100R. I got a smoother idle, easier starting, great sound.... I also got the annoying backfire on deceleration that you describe. I had a Techlusion FI-1031 sitting around that I'd pulled off of my F650 so I gave it a try. It worked great! With a little tuning I had it set up so that the backfire was gone, I had more low end power and I left the top end lean so my fuel mileage was still in the mid 40s when cruising the highway. I didn't like the extra wires hanging off of my left throttle body and the fact that you have to unplug the oxy sensor with this model Techlusion so I looked around for something with a little cleaner installation.

I found this chip (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250070095341&ssPageName=ADME:B:EF:US:11) on ebay and decided that for the price, I'd give it a try . This also cured the backfire, got me a little rougher idle and LOTS of extra power. It also cost me 5-7 MPGs.

Note: for your $65 you get the chip in a static proof bag inside a bubble envelope. No instructions, nothing else.

Both of these worked but I'll probably switch back to the Techlusion so I can get my fuel mileage back up into the 45-50 MPG range.

Hope this helps.

Mike, thanks for the link. I already implimented most of the survice suggestions there, including the throttle body sync.

Daren, sounds like your fixes actually work. Thanks for weighing in - I wil definitely try out one of those solutions. Spending a few bucks after all of this frustraion will be a pleasure.

No more backfiring for me. No, I didn't replace the stock exhaust, I installed a Techlusion FI-1031 TFI injection box. Best $215. I ever spent on the bike. With the settings at the suggested starting points for after market exhaust and the oxygen sensor unpluged as they suggest, the problem is gone.

In addition, I have much more control over fuel delivery at all rpm's. Also cures surging I hear, though I wasn't suffering from that. Great product - period. Thanks again all.
