OK. I have the clsssic golden flake transmission oil issue. The bike has also "hicupped" in third gear a few times. Sooooo....... I am just about to remove the transmission (serial # 0002335DAV) from my '96 RT with 78k miles. I am removing it to address possible bent shift fork(s) and worn dogs.

Have any of you regular guys out there gotten into the transmission itself on your own to do anything like this? Would you recommend that I do the same? Am I completely delerious and fast approaching a potentially embarrasing and/or expensive "lesson well learned"?

Thanks in advance!

gearbox innards are not for the faint of heart. things need to be aligned and shimmed just so or things can go bad quick (from what i've heard, never had the nerve or need to crack one open myself). seems most people who do their own wrenching to the level of valves, tbs, replacing worn seals or other items stop short of dismantling a gear box..........the reasons must be pretty good. i for one, am nervous about doing work on bike that involves fine tolerances (such as those in the gearbox) cause i don't think my measurement tools or knowledge are up to par.

I just replaced my tranny on my R1100RT-P. If it were me in your shoes, I would remove the box, take it to the dealer, be there when they open it just to look inside, and let them do the repair. A local mech said it wasn't too hard to repair trannies...but that is what he has been doing for years! You will save some money on the time-consuming labor part, and save headaches letting them do the critical stuff. H.

Hubby sent his hicuppy RS tranny to Tom Cutter (Rubber Chicken Racing Garage) on the recommendation of Anton Largiader, tech writer for the "other" national BMW organization.

Fortunately Anton also loaned him a transmission for the interim period, since "Clifford" began behaving very badly at the beginning of the riding season. So the transmission-ectomy happened TWICE.

The cost was about $1500 for the rebuild, but far cheaper than a new bike or new tranny.

Another more expensive option is the factory rebuilt transmission. Basically a nearly completely new unit built to the full M97 specs.

How mechanical are you?

I did mine myself at 100,000 miles, along with under cutting the gears to prevent a repeat. I found it pretty easy, although I do have a pretty well equiped shop.

My philosophy...

"It's screwed up. You can't screw up what's already screwed up.

As long as you can, at least, get it back to where it was, go for it.

Where are you located? Your profile doesn't say.

You might be able to find somebody who can help
