I'm currently riding a 2003 K1200GT and am considering trading for a 2007 R1200GS. I commute approximately 30 miles / day to and from work on the GT and plan to do the same with the GS. If well maintained, how many years (average) should reasonably be expected out of the motor, transmission, and the bike in general? Are there any negatives to be aware of? Thanks for your help.

According to your numbers, about 13 years!

I don't own one, but I want one. I believe it's BMW's best selling model, currently. It's garnered numerous international awards, is pretty low maintainance, and everyone I know who owns one (that's about 20) loves his.

I don't see how you could go wrong.

yeah, if you figure 10,000 miles a year (your commute plus some nice trips) you should easily have a nice bike for many years. tons of previous generation oilheads with over 100,000 miles on the odometer, no reason the current generation won't hold up just as well with proper care.

I just added the 07 GS Adv to the stable of bikes and can tell you that I tend to gravitate toward the GS rather than the RT for the daily commute (50 miles each way). The RT provides better protection during rain, but the GS Adv (with the bigger tank) has surprisingly good protection on its own! But hands down, it's a much funner bike (funner is a technical term I think :dunno ) and I still have a goofy grin after each ride :thumb .

I concur with the other comments that the GS should last as long as any other oilhead. My RT has 80K and is still going strong . . . but I suspect it will accumulate more dust rather than more miles in the foreseeable future!

Don't worry about all that petty stuff, just buy one! The fun factor will far outweigh any concern about all the things you are thinking about! :lol

I spent a lot of time test driving the GS1200A before I finally cheaped out and bought an 1150 instead..."funner" is certainly accurate...it's like riding a big dirt bike...I managed to loft the front wheel skyward way too often and found myself tossing it into corners like I was Jay Springsteen at the Springfield Mile. I'm guessing that I'll have so much fun of the 1150 this year that I'll end up selling off some lesser bikes and getting a 1200 in the future:D
