In the course of trying to fix a stiff turning steering head, it was necessary to remove fron fairing on my 1981 R100RT. After trying and failing to remove fairing, I am giving up until someone out there can hopefully tell me of a procedure. The Haynes and Clymer manuals are rather vague, or I am not smart enough to figure this out. Please reply by e-mail, or by phone at 401 862 5026....Thanx

Have you tried poking around the exploded views on Max's online fiche?

Wasn't this a subject of a previous thread?

I just removed (and have partially reinstalled) the fairing from a 1981R100RS. Take your time, label the fasterners and put into small zip lock bags for reassembly. I had to remove the crash bars and took off the exhaust system ..which made the bottom sides and front cover piece easy to remove. The top fairing came off as one piece after disconnecting the turn signals, running light , headlight ignition, amp meter and clock..again I mad note of the electrical connections and place it into ziplock bags. I also took off all of the screws and speed fasterners and kept a list of where they went. On the RS, the rearview mirrors on either side need to be removed and there are 2 10mm bolts on either side towards the front of the fairing that secure on the fairing bracket. You might need some help to pull the fairing off, I did it myself, but an extra pair of hands would have been helpful.

good luck..it isn't too bad a project...Once I have the pushrod seals replaced, I'll complete installing the lowers/
.

It's not that difficult. I have an 88 R100RT. This is kind of an abridged description. First remove the three portions of the lowers. You will also need to remove the screws holding the lower center portion of the fairing (not part of the lowers). The piece I'm talking about is between the head light and forks. Once these are removed, there are only four bolts left. The two lower ones are accessed once the headlight is removed. Access to the upper bolts are best done by removing the clock and voltmeter. No need to remove the bolts, just loosen them. Once loose, the fairing can be pulled off from the front, but make sure all hoses and electrical wires have been removed. Take a look at the exploded view on either Maxbmw, A&S Cycle, or another site with the part fiche. The fiche with the fairing bracket should give you a better idea where to look for the bolts.

I lubed my 95 R100RT stearing head with the upper fairing on. I had to remove the lowers and center lower to get the forks off.

One tip, I tied a rope between my garage door tracks and
suspended the handlebars. This made it a lot easier as the adjusting of the bearings is trial and error which requires remounting and removing the bars several times.

I needed both a 1/2 drive torque wrench for the stem and fork nuts and 3/8 drive for the clamp bolts.

Sounds like the two lower bolts mentioned above are still there. Mine came off easily.
