My wife loves to ride with me but she needs the suport, plus when we travel in out Motor Home all we have for transportation is a motorcycle. What is available in back rests that will fit the stock original seet on the bike? I have looked at to Corbin seats but would prefer to have the original seat on the bike. Will their backrests fit the stock seat?

Do a search on ebay motors for bmw and check the motorcycle parts. You may refine the search by checking bmw backrest, etc. Reynolds was/is a company that made/makes 'em. Try "reynolds" in your search. If you don't find any today check back periodically and some back rests will become available. g'luck.

Here's a set of scans of the Reynolds brochure from about 1982 or so.

I have the model back rest R150 on my /7. It works well and I like the way it accents the bike...good place to tie soft things to (sleeping bag, etc.).

You might also want to post a request on items wanted on the Flea Market.

I believe I have two, if you're interested in one. I'll have to search for them sometime after the holidays. It replaces the grab rail and bolts into the same bolt holes.

The one I have is pictured in the fourth from the left photo on the top row in Kurt's post.

Doug is going to need the Reynolds backrest for the SHORT swing arm /5 - not the long swing arm model. The seat pan on the LWB /5's is longer by just over an inch. The front mounting holds for the grab rail (or back rest) are in the same place on both designs, but the back holes are further back on the LWB seat. Since the actual seating area was the same length on both, Reynolds used the same dimensions for the front (side) brackets, but changed the angle of the two back (center rear) brackets: they have a sharper bend just below the backrest pad. BMW used basically the same approach for the stock grab rail.

It might be possible to bend one to fit the other, but that would be somewhat risky with a rare part.
