I need some help on a steering damper on my R75/6.How can I tell if its worn and can I live without it off the bike? TIA,S.D.

You can live without it. The only time I've found it useful at all is trying to go way too fast on either down hill bumpy roads or on very rutted dirt roads. I don't know how to tell if it's worn other than checking for any damping at all in its action.

Mine "doesn't work" (and hasn't for a few years), and everything seems just fine.

As an addendum, it just ocurrred to me that my R100 didn't have one when I got it. I mounted the damper from my dear departed (read: totalled and stripped for every usable part) R75/6 and then left it on the 0 (no damping) position for all but a couple of hundred of the next 22k miles.

Probably you can get along without it, but I have seen /6's new out of the box that would speedwobble without the dampener activated. Make extra sure your fork and swing arm bearings are correctly adjusted, forks in good repair, etc.
