From looking at the parts fiche it looks like he quoted you the price for a whole new master cylinder. The repair kit is $68.

Take the master cylinder apart and see if it is rebuildable before you order the kit. Any pitting or gouges that won't clean up with a minor hone means you will have to replace the cylinder. If you or the PO has done regular fluid changes you might be OK remembering it is almost thirty years old.

It is possible to sleeve old cylinders if you can find someone to do the work. Personally I have seen too many hydraulic failures in my day so I go for new if I have the slightest doubt. After all, it is my ass that is on the line. If you have ever had a cylinder go completely "to the grip" (or to the floor) with no warning, you would feel the same.

Try Yoyodyne (http://www.yoyodyneti.com/Search.aspx?Keyword=brembo)
You might need to call them on the telephone. Their web page doesn't always reflect what they have, what they can get, or what stuff costs. And unless you know EXACTLY how to ask the web page for what you want, it probably looks like they do not have it.

If it needs replacement, consider going to the later M/C that mounts on the handlebar and running brake lines directly to the calipers. It would be less expensive and work better.

I've used the rebuild kit successfully. Any good dealer should have that kit in stock. There are two different diameters of bore BTW. I think that master cylinder is pretty robust as to pitting, not like the ones on the handlebar that are some kind of alu alloy.

Ditto. Mine sat in the elements for 25 years, most of which it was empty of brake fluid. No pitting, and the rebuild took less than an hour. Hasn't leaked a drop or had any other problems.

I had called what I thought was the better dealer in the area, and whose prices are often right in line with others
before posting my orignal thread, I had gone to A&S fiche and could not find a kit listed
thats why I assumed the dealer was right

thanks to Bunzilla, I went to Max BMW and saw the fiche that had the kit and #'s
yes the dealer must have quoted me the whole master
Now after trying Max, I like thier fiche system better
its easier to navigate in
it gives BMW #'s and a price right there on the same screen

thanks for the tip
