Ya' know, I'm having a wonderful evening. My wife and I are watching "Miracle on 34th Street" with Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle also with Maureen O'Hara, John Payne and Natalie Wood.
Just got done with the 1980's color version and now watching the original 1947 B&W version.
I'll keep it short - in a word "Entertaining"
Real acting: honesty, humor, emotion and passion; something that’s been lost on Hollywood over the last 20+ years.
I’ve laughed, cried and spoke of a time gone by.
Why can’t the people who make movies these days actually make something worth watching?
Reality TV is not my reality – I want to be entertained, I want to not be afraid to sit down in front of the TV and wait for some “Shocking” OMG did he/she just say “b!tch, Sh!t, h3ll or some other vulgar language on primetime TV.
Your comments welcome – either way?

Two my favorite movies are from the seventies.I've got them in my DVD collection and pull them out often.
I've got something against the new action movies with hokey computer special effects.
Here's a hint...

Hey now, missed my point. I'm about as XXX rated as they come you've never heard vulgar language until you've heard me roar in the Team Room. I enjoy rated "R" movie whether it be in the theater or on a premium channel like HBO. But I know what I've come to watch. :thumb
My point (thought) was not so much that everything on TV be "G" rated for kids, but that it entertains you. Makes you want to sit there until the next commercial before making a beer run to the fridge. :deal
I guess I just grew up in a different time - I don't find most of what's on these days worth watching. I guess that's why I spend so much of my free time when I can't do anything else like RIDE sitting here :type with you peoples.

The good shows are getting harder and harder to find. I think I am down to watching NOVA, Frontline and sports.

I will never forget the scene in "Duel" when the semi goes over the cliff in slow motion!

That's it!!! Back then TVs came with a wopping size of 14" and the sides were rounded and the picture tube curved out at you so it could be seen from slight (very slight) angles in the room. :laugh And they came in two colors - Black and White... :laugh
Nothing like today, I can't wait to buy a 50" flat panel high definition plasma with seven speaker surround sound so I can sit and watch re-runs of Orange County Choppers and the Office. NOT At least Dallas had a plot - Kill J.R. and then who killed J.R., wait J.R.s not dead... :laugh

Hey SFDOC,
I'm with you. Miracle on 34th Street is a great movie. Better in the black and white version.
There is not much on TV worth my time anymore. Most of the time I have the History Channel or Discovery Channel. All of this so called reality TV is nowhere near reality to me and most everyone I know.
There is also the issue of having the young one around, foul language is now appearing in all time slots so I have to be careful.

It sems to me that the need to use profanity is inversly proportional to the actual talent a given actor/actress actually has. I remember laughing my butt off watching the Stooges, Gerry Lewis, Peter Sellers, etc., and seldom did any guile appear in their scripts. Contrast this with Eddie Murphy's "RAW" performance back in the late 80's where every other word out of his mouth was the big F.
I don't watch much TV either, except for maybe "Dirty Jobs" A&E and Speed Vision. My life's enough of a reality show for me. As for good old movies, "The Outlaw Josey Wales" is my standby.

This is actually why I enjoy watching reality shows. My favorites are Survivor and Amazing Race. There is no inane script, there is no mindless swearing, there are only real people in difficult situations. There is real joy and heartache. The "actors" usually include a few people that you really like, and a few that you hate. It's too late in the season to start watching Amazing Race, the current season is almost over. But Survivor still has a few good weeks left in it, and it's getting interesting. Give it a look.
I know what you mean about movies. My favorite from the past few years was Million Dollar Baby. But look at my Netflix queue, everything is from the 30's and 40's. (Well, except for Rocky and Bullwinkle.)

Hey Doc,
Just wait till you have your little ankle biter running around. Policing your world (television, your own language, other people) to protect your child adds a whole new perspective to life. You see things differently once you have a child. Speaking of....How's the wife and pregnancy coming along?
Got any names picked out?
Take Care,

One of my favorite Christmas shows is the Christmas Story. The one with the kid that wants the Red Ryder BB gun.
You'll shoot your eye out!
I love the hubcap scene and the Dad's battle with the furnace.

Duel - Fester drives a Dart? across the desert after having iritating a road rage monster in a '56 Rustoleum with a sluggish Cat.
Vanishing Point - That lawyer guy carries white crosses from Denver to San Francisco wrapped in a Jaguar with a Blind Melon Bowtie. Pittiful ending mostly due to some Movie Code of Ethics I am sure cause that bad momma jamma of a Challenger had no top end!

Can't forget South Park with Mr. Hanky the Christmas poo.
How about The Man Show Christmas special. Now there is some real family T.V. for the new millenium.
On a personal note I enjoy Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer narrated by Burl Ives and Frosty the Snowman narrated by Jimmy Durante. Last but not least a Charlie Brown Christmas.
I truly love the Christmas season. The lights, music and sounds of the Salvation Army Bell Ringers, food and beer.
I hate the commercialization of Christmas.
Merry Christmas

How there is an extreme lack of original thought when making movies these days? Why do we have remakes of movies like the "Poseidon Adventure?" Or a better question, why do we have so MANY remakes of movies at all, especially movies that weren't all that great to begin with?
I'm not a fantasy or sci-fi guy, but the LOTR trilogy was fairly well done, I think, and that's because they based it on a decent story from decent writing.
Ever watch SNL lately? It's about as unfunny as all get out. Remember SNL back in the 70's? There were some unfunny skits then as well, but for the most part it was entertaining. I don't think this is all due to the talent, I think the writing is what's gone stale.
This is true of so many TV shows. This is why we've got so many "reality" shows these days. You don't need to write them, you just need to come up with some wacky idea, and let the show write itself as you film seemingly "real" situations. It's just an exercise in editing.
The original "Miracle on 34th Street" is a true gem. In my opinion (and I'll probably get some flack for this), so is "A Christmas Story" about the boy who wants the BB gun. It's a good story, good acting, and narrated by the author of the original story.
I'm sure somebody will probably try to remake this, or perhaps a sequel. But I hope not.

Heaven help us if they decide to remake any of the old Airport movies. Or even The Towering Inferno. As I said earlier I'm a fan of action movies but not of computer generated special effects. I'm more old-school StarWars than new school.
A noteable exception is the new Battlestar Galactica series on SciFi. They have very tastefully done CG ships.

Agreed. I prefer MAD TV. Much funnier than SNL. especially the guy that does the impression of Kenny Rogers. He pretty much nails it.
