This holiday season get together with a friend and make a list of tools neither
of you would ever buy for yourself. Then buy them for each other. You get
the pleasure of giving a gift your friend wants but cant justify buying and you
get that special Magnetic Wobble Bearing Guide Flange Puller that you NEED
but only to use once every three years.

Interestingly, when I was a partner in a Diesel service company years ago,
we used to do that every Christmas and for birthdays. Between the six of us,
we SHARED a really nice collection of some fairly sophisticated tools to do
specific jobs which we then used to make even MORE money the next year
(to buy ever more exotic tools for each other).

It’s a psychological game of course since you still spend money on special
tools. It’s just that this way, you get to make someone happy doing it. Our
local Snap-Off tool salesman thought it was a great idea too ;-)

What a great idea, I always buy myself a special tool in January, to start the year off on the right track.

It's amazing what a great collection of specialized tools you can accumulate...Rod.

I do a variation of this with my family. They ask me for gift ideas for Christmas, my birthday and fathers day. At Christmas I give them a list of specialty tools and motorcycle gear I would like but wouldn't buy for myself normally. They get together and select from the list. Some years they only have given a nice gift certificate toward an expensive piece other years the item itself.

It is a great attitude adjustment when things are not going well and you reach for a tool, a piece of camping or whatever it is and you are struck with the memory of who gave it to you.

Thats what I do too. This year for Xmas I'm getting a TwinMax and some new footpegs. :D
