does anyone know who can fix the odometer on my speedometer.
speedometer works but the odometer does not work. I thought I had it fixed once, but the problem keeps coming back. I had disasembled the speedometer head and pushed one of the gears back on the shaft it is slipping on, but the problem came right back. this is one of the 80mph speedo heads from an 82 rt100r.

You did. You just needed to fix the gear in place.

Got to tech tips on left side.

Second page, 'bout 2/3 way down. Follow the instructions exactly or you get a do over. DAMHIK

I've sent several speedo/tach assemblies off to Palo Alto Speedo for repair. Problems included malfunctioning odometer. Palo Alto isn't cheap, but they do excellent work.

My speedo/tach looked brand new when returned from the refurbishment.

I tried to do a self-repair on an old Triumph Bonneville speedo a few years back. The result was a speedo that could no longer be repaired. I had to buy a new speedo. I concluded that a repair by a professional was much less expensive than a new speedo. YMMV.

A couple of other options include North Hollywood Speedometer and Overseas Speedometer (Austin, TX)...no affiliation. No recent experience with Palo Alto, but a lot of anecdotal information suggests they're expensive and not very timely.

(But where does Palo Alto get their parts from?)

I don't know, but they won't sell parts. I'd inquired about the rubber cover over the odo trip button on my GS/PD. Palo Alto wanted $75 and for me to send the speedo in for that repair.

Since the speedo was otherwise working, I opted for a less expensive fix. I used a rubber cover for a brake caliper bleed nipple (minus the extra bit that lets the cover attach to the nipple) as a means of covering the odo trip button. A perfect fit. A dab of seam sealer on the rubber cover helps secure it to the speedo glass. Thanks to Re-Psycle BMW for that hint.

A BIG thumbs up for Re-Psycle. Rich convinced me to make my own handset biter wedges after Boxerworks lost a parts order that included 2 of them for $10 each.

I had the same odometer problem with my 86 R80RT and I also thought it was a slipping gear. It wasn't but it was the gears between the numbers jamming (apparently). If I had tried to use the speedometer on the bike after I repaired the slipping gear, I would have ruined the whole thing. I sent mine to Overseas Speedometer (Austin, TX)...and they repaired it. The cost was a little over $100. Palo Alto wanted around $200 and I could buy new for less than that from BMW of Chicago. It has worked fine for about a year now so now the 1 year repair warranty is about up.

I just finished repairing my odometer this weekend by following the instructions on the airhead site listed above. It included pixs with the step by step instructons, and was easy to do. Total cost was $4.00 for the JB Weld, and about 2 hours of my time....
