I purchased a Techlusion yesterday for my 2001 R1150GS. I had the dealer install and set base settings. Surging reduced a little bit. How much tuning should I expect to eliminate surging? Also, do I set the Big Brass Screws to BMW specs., or do I use Twinmax to sync. first then, tune techlusion.
Any info appreciated thanks.

I would do a complete thorough engine tuneup before expecting the Techlusion to do the work.
That includes, as a minimum.
1. Clean injectors. A per instructions dose of Techron Fuel System cleaner in a tank of fuel followed by an oil change.
2. Adjust valves very carefully to specifications.
3. Throttle body synchronization; both at idle and on the cables.
4. Check timing (probably does not need adjustment but should be checked).
Then I would fine tune the Techlusion per its instructions.
This will ensure that the Techlusion isn't just masking or covering up basic tuning problems with the engine.

+1.....anything less is not going to do it....may be able to skip the timing....

Hey Jim! I just got back into the frey....I picked up a 2002 R1150RS.....Looks like my old 2000RS...Replaced my totaled K1200RS....I've been searching this forum and it looks like you turned into the Techlusion guru over the years.........Hopefully I'll be able to pick your brain as this bike will need one of those "wonder boxes"

Wouldn't it be easier if BMW just made fuel injection that worked? :huh
Just asking.

Sure!
But folks would still want magnets for their fuel lines, toilet paper rolls for oil filters, twinkle lights for their plug wires, and any number of great products which have been sold over the years.
BMW's fuel injection does work on most bikes most of the time. Many cases of surging are cured with a proper careful tuneup. In some few cases tolerances stack toward the lean side - and for "environmental" reasons these bikes are designed on the very edge of too lean to begin with. Or something like a dirty injector is out of whack. In these cases the enrichment provided by the Techlusion is useful.
If you ever had a Chrysler Corporation product manufactured in 1978 then you experienced the "lean burn engine" which in factory trim was untunable. If it started cold it wouldn't run well hot - and vice versa. If it idled OK it stumbled on acceleration. If it was 45 degrees and humid the carb would ice up in 30 miles. And it had those horrible mixture screws that had to be broken to adjust. A few dollars and many hours could make that engine run right. I hit a left turner and totalled mine before I got it perfect. I got out of the car - looked at the crumpled front end, and said, "Damn I hope it's totalled."
Never felt that way about any BMW motorcycle - although I have heard of a few folks that have.

OK, I spent Sunday tuning the Techlusion to the best of my ability. Definetly an improvement. Nice performance improvement on accelation and high-end speed. Still experiencing surging in 1st and 2nd gear low speed crusing, no surging in these gears on slight or heavy acceleration. Called tech support. They recommended that I connect the yellow and white wire, this will over-ride something. I don't feel comfortable doing this so I may have the dealer give them a call. I'll report back on fuel consumption. Also, what should the top end speed be this bike with Techlusion?
Thanks.

They do ------------------now. At this rate we'll have flawless rear ends in another twenty years.

What white and yellow wires? And this begs the question - which Techlusion did you buy? They make one now that is plug and play, no splicing of wires needed, works with the O2 sensor.. I can't see even bothering with the lesser models unless you've eliminated the O2 sensor and the catalytic converter.
As far as top-end-speed - it shouldn't really change much.. at best a slightly richer mixture might give a few more HP (my dyno curves on my RS indicated a few more) - but that won't be a significant different in top-end..

It is the plug and play. Tech support wanted me to splice the white and yellow wire going out from the unit.

My techillusion equiped R1100 still surged after all the tuning that anyone ever mentioned was done. Installing Autolite plugs with the techillusion is what worked for me. I'm very picky about my idle and low RPM performance. The throttle bodies can be way....off and the bike will still feel good at 3K+ rpm.
One reason some bikes surge and some don't is the rider. If I short shift and roll in high gear at 20mph thru downtown it would surge. That's what the techlussion and autolites fixed for me. Checking the thread on "RPM's" there are some who would call this lugging and thus harmful to the engine.

Hijack - Speaking of the Autolite plugs, has anybody used these plugs on the dual plug head? if so any part numbers available please? I understand the two lower plugs are a different number? The Autolite site does not go to 2004 dual spark
Hijack over we now return to normal programming...lol

I did get the "plug n play" type. The yellow and white wires coming out of the unit are the wires the tech support told me to connect together.
