GPS plots

I'd like to see GPS plots of the trips I see in ON.

It'd be fun to load a copy of the route Tom Hall and the MSMC guys took up on the lost coast and follow along or, better yet, actually go ride it.

Does anybody know of a source of paper or electronic maps that are free of copyrights or cheaply licensed?

Early this year, ON published my article and cover shot on a New Zealand ride. It would have been better if I could have provided a marked NZ map with the routes and points of interest shown. But most printers and publishers refuse to print such items without a letter from the map company you used. I have been told that map publishers even routinely build in deliberate small errors in their maps, so they can more easily prove/litigate copyright issues.

Any solutions out there?

What were you doing on the morning of September 11, 2001?

I was at home, and just before going to the office, I checked the GWRRA General Board to find a post about the first WTC being hit. I turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane hit the second tower. I didn't go into the office that day.

Hold that thought.

Last summer I took a job at a major retail bookstore, and doing a search one day for a customer wanting to use GPS in his RV, we found that (mapping) companies who used to provide coordinates have been quietly pulling or revising their products.

If you have a friend who can supply coordinates to you via a private dialogue, you are priviledged. But getting them from a public source will, I think, become increasingly difficult.

The Lost Coast ride looked interesting. If you read
Road Runner, they publish routes for each set of rides.
I have often wondered why ON doesn't. But then I guess
the folks that submit articles are not all writers?

P.S. It's just as easy to have someone walk to the location of
your choice and mark the waypoint on a GPS as look it up. And
if you're really in a hurry, a copy of Streets and Trips will give you
GPS coordinates too.
