View Full Version : My first BMW
I am the proud owner of a 2004 1150RT, Titan Gray. I traded my 02 VStar Classic a couple of weeks ago while attending Biketoberfest in Daytona. I had lusted after a FJR1300 but Yamaha's odd (and frustrating) buying ordeal was simply too much to tolerate.
It was love at first site with 'Marlene' and suddenly the keys to my Star ~ which I had lavished with love and care, were handed over to the good folks at the dealership with nary a tear.
The RT is extraordinary; it seems to be guided by synapses rather than discernable rider imput. By comparison to any other bikes I have owned, this feels like one is piloting a jet fighter.
My good friend and riding buddy also fell under the svelte seductress's spell and traded his ST1100 for the fetching red color. Our wives were not amused (actually mine was livid)but time, as we know is a great healer.
I had a roadside chat with a member of the local constabulary while riding to work last week. Apparently he took exception to my velocity which, moments before, I had noted, was considerable and, I had thought 'this thing is going to get me into trouble'. The officer was a young fellow and I think he was rather taken aback by my 'maturity' when I flipped up the Schuberth. He let me go without a ticket; in fact I detected more of a plea to slow down, rather than a warning.
This site a wonderful resource and I have learned much already. I do have a question; it seems to me the deliciously shaped tank could do with a protector, I saw an FJR with a carbon fiber one that looked quite good. Any suggestions?

Hey Oly,
COngratulations on your purchase and for being to old to get a ticket. BTW, What is your pet peeve?
Congrats on the bike, OLY. I made the same step (even the same color) in Sept, although I jumped up from an R80RT. All I can say about the 1150RT, is it's totally awesome. I can't get enough of it, and then we got snowed on with 8 inches. But hey, it's supposed to be a nice week, in the 40's, maybe the white will disappear and I can ride some more! Good luck with the bike, I am sure you will enjoy it to the fullest.

Hey Oly-
Congratulations on your new ride. It sure is one sweet machine. IMHO, the twins have lots of character.
I would suggest you consider joining the MOA. A great bunch of people and a very good magizine.
Be safe out there and enjoy your ride.

Rider Warehouse (Aerostich folks) sell a kit of clear plastic sheets that go on with water. They are almost invisible.

Oly - I have one of those clear plastic sheets that Frank mentioned on the rear edge of the tank on my RT. They work pretty well but I think that you will find that the bike is extremely well engineered to protect areas of common scuffs and dings. I was worried only about a zipper fob or beltbuckle on the rear edge of the tank. I also put one on each side in the "vulnerable" area around the pegs.
Thanks to all who responded; in addition to being an awesome machine, the RT apparently can change the weather. Since buying the bike the weather here in Charleston has been sublime and the forecast for tomorrow (Wednesday) is for sun and 80 degrees! I've only taken the car to my office once since 10/17 ~ life is good.
I believe I'll order the carbon fibre tank protector from ZTechnic ~ even comes with a roundel.
It appears the Titan Gray along with my riding suit suggests to 4-wheelers that I am a cop ~ I've had several of 'em slow down and wave me past. Odd really as cops are woefully underdressed on the job.

Congratulations! I too, have recently acquired a new RT. Responsive, nimble and sexy are all descriptions that conjure up images of the RT in my mind. Usually it happens during the busniess day when I find myself daydreaming about a curvaceous alpine road under a bright azure sky.
Mark,
If you had to get rid of two of your bikes(heaven forbid), which one would you keep?

I bought the CLC because I lacked the confidence to ride the RT. I had not been riding for a number of years and was just returning to the sport. To complicate matters further, I am rather short. I went to the dealership and felt most comfortable with the CLC. Time passed, confidence returned and I eventually bought the RT. So, in answer to your question, it has to be the RT. At the risk of not being PC, I have to say that she is a beautiful sexy woman with no inhibitions and an appetite for action.

I know what you mean. I'm fifty with a long gray beard (grow it every year to play Santa Claus). I seem to get a lot of looks from the man when on the GS, and you can't tell my age with a full face helmet on. Its like they want to do a u-turn and follow me. I have a new R1150GS and it does seem that it likes to run a bit faster than 55mph. When people see me on it they tend to want to test you a little speed wise or push. More than I remember thirty years ago when I was younger on a 650 Triumph Trophy. Do you experience this attitude? My GS reminded me of the 650 Trophy but a hell of a lot nicer. I liked the handeling of the old 650 Trophy, but everything on the GS is way beyond it.One thing for sure here in central West Virginia they have not seen anything like ithe GS. A lot of weird looks when they check out the rear drive train. I know my day is coming hope I run in to a cop as cool as yours was.
