I'm thinking of installing early K12GT leg guards on my 99 K12RS. Does anyone know how these things attach to the trim panels?

The rubber part, the guard, I believe has threaded studs and mounts thru holes in the RS panel. There is a plug in nut at the bottom though and has a screw in it from the outside. It's doable. Do you have the hand guards? If you do that, buy the police ones which are a lot cheaper and matt black. They have a hole in them which is for the police lighting, but no problem.

I was considering doing this myself, but I don't know if I want the holes in the plastic.
If you do end up doing it, take some before and after pics to share.

Looking at a parts fiche on Max BMW's web site I don't see any studs on the guard and there is no mounting hardware shown. Is it possible that the guards are glued to the trim panel?
My main reason for possibly installing them is to conceal some paint damage to the outer edge of the trim panel.

They're probably glued at the top, but there is a screw at the bottom. Do an image search on the internet and you'll see it.

It's not very well documented. The nut and washer shown in the microfiche shows quantity X. That means that they didn't feel like counting them so they just slapped in an X. Those are the nuts and washers that are used on the studs...probably 6 of them or so. Not shown correctly. I find that this is not unusual for BMW. When the K100 was updated thru several fairing changes to the K1100, they bolted things on top of things. And a nightmare of rubber heated air shields, etc.
I don't think glue would have worked here. It's not like BMW to glue something on like that. If you don't want holes, get a pair of Gerbing heated pants liners (same price as the leg guards) and you can use them on the next bike.
They are starting over again with a K1200GT '06. This should be interesting as always.
On one of the K boards, someone said those lower GT extensions did not add significantly more protection and are not really worth the hassle of mounting to an RS. Some feel the GT model hand protectors ARE worth the effort, though.

Yes, the trim strips have studs and require holes to be drilled. Additionally there is a longer screw required at the bottom of the panel. We went to our local dealer and found a dinged up warranty panel and made a drilling template of the required holes. Worked like a charm.
