BMW Group Press Club:

BMW GROUP REMAINS ON TRACK FOR SUCCESS IN 3RD QUARTER
11/02/2006

Pre-tax profit rises by 9.4% to € 720 million
Revenue and retail targets for full year confirmed

Munich. Following a successful third quarter, the BMW Group is headed for the best year in the company's history. "We are right on track for achieving a record pre-tax profit of € four billion as well as a new record in retail volume for the current year," Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said in Munich on Thursday.

Inconsistent market environment in the motorcycle segment

In the third quarter of the year, the development of the international motorcycle market remained inconsistent. Deliveries declined slightly by 1.4% to 23,230 units (previous year: 23,533) for the first nine months, resulting in a shortfall of 1.9% compared to the same period last year. Revenues for the motorcycle segment rose by 2.2% to € 278 (previous year: 272) million; pre-tax profit remained stable at the previous year's level of € 4 million. As of September 30, the segment's profit before tax increased by 1.1% to € 89 (previous year: 88) million. As previously announced, the BMW Group expects a rise in retail volume, revenues and earnings for the motorcycle business this year.

Gizmodo.com ( http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/laptops/sony-vaio-g1-sub-2pounder-carbon-fiber-goodness-211535.php ) alerts us to the new road warrior tool, but is it motorcycle cool? Dynamism.com gives the company line (http://www.dynamism.com/g1/main.shtml#) on the new lightweight computer then shares the specs (http://www.dynamism.com/g1/specs.shtml) and pricing. Wonderings:

I am wondering what your criteria would be for a motorcycle friendly computer? If you could dedicate a computer to your motorcycling travel needs what would it need to do? How would you use it on an extended tour or iron butt type ride? What programs would you run? What are the minimum hardware requirements?

I currently write and put together the Morning Reads on a Sony K23 lapwarmer. I happily compute and travel great distances on the internet but it is not really a real world traveling tool. I am always looking at the possibility of adding a more road warrior friendly laptop to my personal travel kit.

I am wondering if we could collectively develop a set of Morning Reads criteria to rate what we find as we wonder around. I have been developing my own set of criteria for this someday purchase. Please PM me or post yours.

Sorry Brad, obviously the dictionary is due for updating. Of coarse with over 6,000 posts some may quibble that air box may be more accurate than the obvious.

Now that you know your cornering lines some MotoGP riders show us how not to use them. This video is a bit like the motorcycle version of gooney bird landing videos (http://www.helmethairblog.com/entries/not-your-average-motorcycle-crash-video/) the Nature Channel might show. As far as can be told no one is seriously hurt.

Having travelled with many laptops for many years... at times up to three at one time. Any laptop can do anything and just needs to be packed properly for the bike. It is just like picking a motorcycle, what do you want to do with it.
