Hi. Everyone. Finally got around to placing a supplemental brake light on the rear. When I lifted the fuel tank to access the battery, I smelled fuel. Once everything was connected, I turned the bike on accessory to check the lights and fuel shot out of the fuel line at the coupler. I'm only an average mechanic but can't seem to get the coupler to reconnect. It looks like something broke; the coupler doesn't really click into the sleeve and fuel just oozes out. (I don't even know if I am mentioning the correct parts- its located on the right side of the bike below the tank, there are two lines and the lower/#2 is the one disconnected)Am I missing something. Do I just need new part- how do I go about replacing- looks like you have to have a special tool to clamp the pieces into the hose? Any info, advice will be helpful. Thanks. Keith

I think there was a recall on the quick disconnects. You might want to check with your dealer. If you wind up replacing them yourself, you can use some hose clamps from NAPA to hold the new ones in.

Sounds as if you've broken the quick-disconnect.

I do want to caution you in replacing it - since last time AFTER smelling fuel you turned the ignition on, without locating where the fuel odor was coming from. This isn't a safe practice..

The one-time use clamps can be reused if you're very careful with them, but as others have suggested - screw clamps will make life easier for you. To remove the old clamp - it's usually easiest to pull the end of the quick disconnect out of the hose - then try prying the one-time-use clamp off.

If you're going to use screw clamps - make sure they are FUEL INJECTION clamps, and made for the size tubing you're working with. Fuel injection clamps have a solid band where they clamp on the hose - not the serrated band like "regular" hose clamps have. The solid band gives a better seal and doesn't cut up the hose.

And please use care doing this job. Do it outside your garage, no flame or ignition sources nearby, with a fire extinguisher handy.

Yup, there was a recall on the fuel disconnects, I had mine done (02RT). It is not like a warranty, if you are affected by the recall BMW will take care of it for the life of the motorcycle. So I would recommend getting it checked.

Could it be the o-rings are swollen from fuel and just need to dry out?

I used my model to find it but you are covered under the recall listed here.
