Over the last few months I have been hearing a noise like a tweety bird as I release the clutch. I assume a failure is coming. I asked about using lube on the cable and was advised not to do it.
Has anyone had a similar experience? What was wrong?
I checked under the tank for any nests ;)

You'll have to find where the noise is comming from. Does it move smoothly or does it bind at all? You want to grease the barrels on the end but not the cable. The cable sheath isn't designed for oil and will swell and get damaged along with getting dirty unlike old design cables where you were supposed to oil regularly. The barrels on the end need to beable to pivot in the clutch lever and the other end otherwise it stresses it there and eventually breaks.
Check where the noise is coming from and fix it before your stranded somewhere and maybe carry a spare. When I had cable actuated clutch I'd run an extra one along the one being used so if it would break I'd disconnect the old one and just hook the new ends up.
