What are the pros and cons of the factory alarm for R1200GS vs buying an aftermarket one? Should I just get a disk lock alarm?
Thanks

Nope.
You don't need an alarm when you are always riding it! ;)
In all seriousness I do keep a disc lock under my seat that I use to secure my bike. There are often stories about people leaving an empty gun holster visible on their bike. Seems to deter would-be thieves rather well.
I know there must be someone around here who does have an alarm system...

I have the scorpio with the perimeter sensor and page.
Its a great unit and works well.
The aftermarket alarm has allot more features and is less expensive.
The perimeter is great to keep kids off hot pipes or protect anything in a tank bag ect. The paging is a good feature. Its also an add on to the canbus and youve heard how much BMW likes it when you mess with the Can Bus.
No way the factory alarm would void the warantee.
Feel free to e-mail offl line if you want specifics.

I would have thought more people had alarms. Thanks for those posts.

Alarm - I have insurance. :laugh I've got 68500 miles on her and she runs great and I am truly still in love, but the insurance would take some of the sting out and then I'd probably buy a new one with electronic cruise...
No alarm. I have a good lock and cover I use when I'm away from home overnight. I also try and park in conspicuous places. I've had six bikes, and knock-on-wood, no problem yet.
I've thought about getting an alarm, but a pro can disable one on a bike as easy as a car.
I've decided to use the money on something else and keep the insurance policy up to date.

I've looked at bike alarms. Ended up getting a disk lock with a rather loud alarm built in. Seems to be enough for me, plus I can use it on either of my bikes. I believe it's a Xenea or something like that. It is LOUD, but would probably only scare away a kid just messing with the bike and not a real bike thief. On the other hand, I don't think any alarm would deter a determined bike thief. Let me know if you want more info on the brand, etc.

No alarm, just a ratty old nondescript cover that says "move on to something that is worth more"...lol It has worked up until now.

I have the Scorpio with the perimeter sensor and page.
That's the one I would go for if BMW would release the connectors so that Aritronix could make up plug 'n play harnesses for BMWs.
At the moment, I use an ABUS 59 Extreme U-Shackle and a stand alone noise maker to alert me when I'm nearby (motel, in the shower, etc).
Attaching the motorcycle to an immovable object is of paramount importance. Four guys and a van, and its gone in 60 seconds.
