I can keep warm in just about any kind of weather except for my hands. The heated grips help the palms but my fingertips always go numb. And of course the heavier the glove the less you can feel the heat from the grips. Anybody ever try mounting GS handguards on an RT? Short of getting heated gloves, I thought maybe installing the handguards for more wind protection might do the trick.

I'm sure there are other suppliers this was just the first one to come up in my search. I bought a pair of these in 92 from a local dealer and the work great, are removable, and fit well. The trick is to wear neoprene gloves (less bulk, better feel) which work well in rain as well. I got a pair from Walmart (when it was still ok to shop there) in the hunting/fishing dept. cheap. Now if I could only find where I packed mine this spring.

There is an extensive discussion on the BMW Sport Touring Forum and on the 1100/1150R-bike forum. ( Do a search or let me know if you can't find it. ) You can use GS hand guards. and many do. They take them off in the summer and put them back on each winter. Some have more trouble than others mounting them on an 1100 or 1150R. Some have had to use a Dremel tool to trim them for the clutch hose or cable. Others trim the stop on the clutch reservoir and turn the connection slightly. Some just mount them without any problems. I've thought about mounting some myself now that winter is knocking at our door. BTW, I saw a set of used ones for sale on today on the BMWMOA site.

Oops. Just re-read your post. You want to put hand guards on an RT. My mistake. Would be interesting, but I'm pretty sure they would hit the wind screen when it's in a lower position. I have GS mirrors on my RT, and they hit. I just looked at my RT and I'm pretty sure hand guards would hit also, even if you could mount them.
I just came back from Torrey on my RT. Was 28 degrees when I left. With heated grips, the only thing that got cold was my finger tips, also. I may try heated glove liners. Good luck.

thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. The hippos or gaiters sound like the best solution for the money although a bit bulky and awkward looking. I'm going to be taking the bike in for a 12k service soon and I'll check with the service guys about fitting the GS hand guards. They may help and then again they may not be enough. I don't think they'll touch the wind screen on an 05 RT but they may obscure the low slung mirrors. I may just have to spring for the heated gloves, no doubt they would work. I'll do a search on the Sport Touring Forum and see what I can find there. Anyway, thanks again for all the suggestions. What a great source of information this forum is!
