I'm new here and wasn't sure where to post this. I put it in the "Gear" forum as well and hopes it's not bad form to double post.

I'm considering purchase of a used R-model transmission from Fred Rowland's "Cycles Re-cycled" in Morganton, North Carolina. Does anyone have experience or recommendations about this idea in general, or this business/individual in particular?

Thanks in advance.

I think Fred's been around for awhile. Are you shopping price or availability?

Hey John...Price to the extent I don't want to buy a new box...I don't have a quote from Fred yet...

As for availability, Fred says he has the right box with 20,000 miles, which sounds reasonable...

This is also convenient in that BMW Charlotte will do the work (they recommended Fred) and I need to go to Asheville this week anyway, so picking it up is handy...

I don't know of, nor have I checked, any other alternatives....

No worries. The shop wouldn't have recommended him if he'd been a problematic supplier for them, you know? Because ultimately they have to answer to you on any issues.

I have purchased from Fred before (nothing as big or expensive as a tranny tho) and found him to be knowlegeable and professional. Everything arrived as described and packed properly for the protection of the contents.

I have also had two shops recommend Fred to me for used parts.

Yes, there are alternatives. Google is your friend.

I bought a used 99 tranny from Cycles Recycled in June '05 to replace my '96 R1100RT, rode to Top of Rockies Rally, and many other places with no problems. I put about 18,000 miles on the 99 tranny, I would recommend this company. Gary J. South Dakota #52492.
