I purchased a 2001 R1150GS this weekend.

Two issues:

1) What MPG should I expect to get? Currently, at 75 MPH, I'm experiencing 39 MPG.

2) I'm experiencing excessive surging at speeds below 50 MPH.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Probably this is a good time to ask about the RANGE on your full GS tank as well.
I'm only mentioning it because I had to fly for fuel for a bud who ran dry on a new-to-him
1150GS after we passed two gas stations and he waved on.
He had assumed he'd get as far as I would on my R1150R, and wasn't even close.

In August of this year I took delivery of my '03 1150GS with 9000 miles on it from an an Ebay seller back in Indianapolis. I rode it back to my home in the People's Democratic Republic of California with speeds averaging 75 mph over the interstates. I averaged 48 mpg for the 2200 mile trip. I have never experienced any surging problem.

It still averages about 48 mpg at the 13000 mile mark.

At a steady 75 MPH? If you are working the throttle between one curve and the next, it'll be lower.

I'm regularly getting 44 MPG (US) at a steady true 115 km/hr (71.5 MPH) on a 2 Spark R1150 GS Adventure. No bags installed.

At 5.3 liters per 100 kms, thats a bit better than BMW's claimed numbers of 5.7 l/100 km @ 120 km/hr, but then, I'm also at a 5 km/hr slower speed.

Good enough for a worry free 300-and-a-bit miles per tank at a reasonable cruising speed with plenty of reserve left. :clap

The surging means you need a tune up....valves, plugs, throttle body sync.....but as a new bike owner, you also need to change the fluids, oil, trans, barke fluid, diff......sounds like a day of fun tinkering....

Have you checked the speedometer and odometer ? From the factory my 04 GS was about 10% optimistic on Speed and about 8% optimistic on mileage. This will lead to reported gas mileage better than actual. It also will reach the warranty mileage prematurely. Change out the hub for the correct one. If I recall the correct hub is a 2.9 ratio.
