I just got home from a great 700 mile weekend trip to El Paso. Went over on I-10 on Friday as we were in a hurry to get there :rocker :drink but came back today on New Mexico state highway 9 :thumb . The road was great with absolutely no traffic at all (except for the occasional Border Patrol) but on the way back this afternoon the gear indicator on the rider information display on my 2004 R1150RT started acting up. Gears 0 thru 3 displayed just fine but when it was in 4th gear the display would cycle between 0 and 4 about twice per second, when in 5th gear it would flip between 1 and 5, and when in 6th gear it would cycle between 2 and 6. Occasionally it would just stop on one or the other for a few minutes. I am sure that if I take it to my local dealer it will work just fine while it is in the shop. Has anybody else had this problem? Is this a know problem with a dealer fix?
Thanks,
Tom

The good news is that Paul Glaves wrote an article in the Owners Newsabout how this works. The bad news is that you have to remove the swing arm to replace the switch if that turns out to be the problem.

R1dinman,
Which issue was that article in? I recall seeing that article and thinking what a pain it would be to replace the part but did not realize that it was about this part. But I did not have the problem then.
I called my dealer and they said as long as it was still under warranty and a part that was bad they would repair under warranty. I will take it in this friday, we'll see.

The gear indicator switch is a binary coded switch. The weights are 1, 2, and 4. The 4 bit contact is faulty. Could be the switch or wiring to it.
