Engine Color

Another newbie (say dumb) question...I have noticed in photos of the bottom side of the R engine, it is silver in color. My 99' RT's engine is black with silver surfaces where machining has taken place, like the drain plug surface. Some of the hex head bolts are silver as well. The cylinders and valve/rocker covers are silver. Did BMW paint the RT engine? I'm confused.

Does the black wipe off? Mine is all silver (GS) my Dad's RT is black too but I think it is all road grime.

It does not wipr off. Without removing the tupperware to get a real good look at the entire engine, it appears as the entire engine case is black.

All of the engines are painted. Some are silver, some are black depending on the year and model.
