Hello
New owner to an 04 R1150RT, checked the owner's manual and could not find the answer to this question:
On my previous bike, an 06 Honda Aero, the front turn signals stayed on while the engine was on, acting sort of like running lights.
On my RT, they're off, coming on when I signal a turn of course but then they turn off after I cancel the turn signal.
Is this designed behavior? Do the "driving lights" within the main headlight assembly fulfill this function instead? Thought I'd ask before I take off the mirrors to inspect the bulbs within, I am also NOT getting a rapid blinking signal indicator light which would have indicated a fault.
thanks

Its normal at least on my 2001 R1100RT. I added an aftermarket signal minder that allows you to push once for signal and once again for off. The lights themselves, however, stay on when not signalling. They then act as running lights. I really like not having to press up with my right hand thumb to cancel the signal. That set up sucks. Easy plug and play thing.

thanks, yeah I've heard about those Kisan signal minder units, but so far I've not had problems remembering to manually cancel the signals. The blinking light is much more obvious than on my Aero so it works fine to remind me.
anyone out there with a 2004 RT confirm the behavior as well?

my S generally does a good job of auto canceling the turn signal, but i usually notice it anyway

thanks all for your replies.
I guess it was a Honda thing, to have the front turn signals on all the time.
thanks again

Honda and Kawasaki both use a three wire socket and a two filament bulb to use the front signals as running lights on some models. Like most others, the RT uses a two wire socket with a single filament bulb.

Actually there's sort of a fix for what you were looking for at least at the tail light end. One of my mechanics switched out the two outside turn signal sockets using two K1200LT sockets. They switch out pretty easily, but more amazing than anything else is when you buy the two LT sockets at the parts counter, the cost is like $2.50 a piece for a BMW part. Go figure. You then need the standard two element bulbs for a LT to replace the original bulbs that were in your RT sockets.
The good news is you end up with the outside amber sections being on all the time along with your center red tail light. The bad news is I'm told it's actually illegal to have amber lights on in the rear. I've had many cops riding behind me in traffic and not one has ever pulled me over for them.
As far as the front, I would recommend Motolights to be seen. Having those extra lights facing straight ahead is what helps keep left turning cars up ahead from coming across you at the wrong time.

Thanks RTRandy for the advice and tip.
Interesting re the rear turn signals while using K1200LT bulb sockets.....
As to the front facing lights, I will consider those motolights if I ever decide the headlight modulator I got modulating the highbeam is not working out for me. So far though, it seems to get my bike notices as much as a similar unit did on my Honda Aero.
thanks again
