I just bought a 1996 BMW R1100RT with 78K miles. The bike is in average condition for the miles and age I'd say.

This is my first BMW and I am interested in completing some recommended maintenance. Can anyone make suggestions? where is the best place to start.

Thanks in advance.

if you've got no maintence history on it, first step is all fluids, engine, transmission and final drive and brakes

secondly, valve adjustment and throttle body synch

finally, check all your cables, brake pads and the belt for your alternator

for a bike with 78K miles there are a few more "bigger" jobs you might consider, but those can be dealt with later

also, tires, do you know how old they are?

Contact your local BMW dealer and have him check the VIN on your bike for recalls and maintence records. A complete 24K/Annual service should have been done recently on your bike.
