One of the other engineers at work came up to me yesterday and asked me if I wanted to go to a job fair at UCSD on Tuesday. Hmm.. Sit in the office or go to San Diego? I said sure. He was flying down on Southwest for $258 (late reservation). So, I figured I could just ride down there. It's 500 miles one way. I told my CFO I was thinking of riding down and she said she'll reimburse me mileage $0.40/mile up to the cost of the plane ticket plus a hotel room. After doing the math, I figured gas would cost me about $90 leaving me over $150 in my pocket, plus I'm getting paid while I'm on the bike.
Sweet.

By all means, do it!!!! Sounds like a sweet deal and you get to ride. :wave Now if my boss would send me someplace that I could take my bike. Last trip I had was in May to Ottawa for 2 days of training. Riding would have taken 4 days to get there (I don't do uber long rides) and 4 days to get back. Boss wouldn't authorize that so it was air travel.

Travel safe. Having done this a limited amount of times, it is a blast. Now that I have to haul equipment on trips it has curtailed the activity quite a bit.

Learned years ago how to pack a 3-piece suit (yes, jacket, vest, and pants) in a vinyl suit bag that would fit into a Krauser. The only problem was the time I was staying at the Hyatt in Cincinnati. Woke up and realized I'd forgot my white dress shirt. Not to worry, the hotel store opened at 9:00am, meeting was at 9:00am, only a few minutes late! After that, it was the old pack list for me. Still use the pack list today...no matter where or for what I'm traveling. Ride Like the Wind (and enjoy)...

Sounds like a blast, Burnz. Be sure to get some fish n' chips at the Shakespeare Pub, off Washington near the airport.

For personal vehicle use for business purposes the rate for 2006 reimbursement is 44.5 cents per mile. If you use a motorcycle it is 30.5 cents per mile. Anything over standard rate is supposed to be treated as taxable compensation. Just a heads up.

:thumb Way to go Burnszilla. Gotta grab those opportunities when you can. Lucky dude. :thumb

I tried this once, only the business trip was to Dallas and I work in the SF Bay Area. I was up for it, and didn't even care about the mileage reimbursement. I asked my boss to comp me a day or two of riding time in place of airfare, and I'd cover the rest of my expenses and remaining days off. He gave the thumbs up, but then Risk Management heard about and tried to put the kibosh on it. Motorcycling was too dangerous, blah blah blah. I pointed out the inconsistencies of this ruling, since it's OK for me to ride my bike to meetings in Sacramento, and there's no defined policy. Eventually our VP got involved and said I could go, "But just don't crash!" So I rode, I didn't crash, and I earned a SaddleSore 2000 in the process. I showed those suckers!! :nyah From that time on, I don't tell them my mode of transpo, I just show up.

Moral: Better to ask forgiveness than permission.

Never knew that! The IRS only permits 30.5/mi for motorcycle mileage? Last time someone figured it out, taking into account maintenance and tires, the motorcycle was at least as expensive to drive as the cage, even though gas mileage is often better. Of course reality does not translate to IRS regs.

It is a shame that my expense form simply says "personal vehicle" :nyah

That's because at 40 cents a mile for reimbursement, she's saving the company money a majority of the time!

There didn't used to be two amounts, and if you use your own airplane, it's $1.07 per mile.

Did someone mention reality and IRS in the same sentence? That's brave.

No fair to take it out of context! :wow
