Sometime in the future I will want to remove the front wheel on my R1200RT . What tool do I need to remove the axle . Do I need a BMW tool or can I use something else ?

www.r1200gs.info has some ideas for this. Motion Pro sells a generic 4-size axle tool that works. I use a BMW toolkit sparkplug wrench that fits prfectly inside the axle.

I had to remove my front wheel prior to buying one of the after market 22mm tools. I had an assortment of inexpensive sockets that are sold in the plumbing department of most hardware stores to work on various plumbing fittings. You normally get 5 or 6 sockets on a storage clip for less than $10. One of these sockets fit perfectly inside the front axle. I leave the good tool at home in my toolbox and carry the plumbing socket on the bike. I am able to store one of my screwdrivers inside the socket so it takes up less room in my tool pouch.
