I know there is always a lot of discussion about getting more (and younger) riders to start getting interested in BMW's. There is talk about what types of bikes would attract them, price issues, etc. One thing that I was wondering about is advertising. It may be just my location, but I have NEVER seen a BMW motorcycle commercial on TV. Does anyone see these? There are so many people out there that haven't even HEARD of BMW motorcycles (I meet them every day), it's no wonder they don't sell more. So, do they just not advertise in my area, or not at all? With all the fancy videos they have on their website, you would think they could spend a bit of money to put a spot on TV, here or there. Think it would help? Any thoughts on why they don't advertise, more?

I was thinking they could do one of those fancy K1200R commercials showing how fast it is (sportbike crowd), some guy cruising the countryside on the R1200R (cruiser crowd), or maybe the R1200GSA crossing rivers, heading down some rough dirt tracks, and sitting at the top of a mountain (adventerous types), just for starters. Possibly throw an airhead in the mix to show their heritage. They can end the commercial with the BMW logo and underneath, it can say "Yeah, we make motorcycles." :)

It is funny how many people don't know that BMW makes bikes. One of my wife's clients wanted to take a picture of her on her motorcycle. When the woman saw the roundel on the tank, she asked if my wife had just stuck that on as a decoration. Of course, I was very surprised to find out that Harley Davidson makes the F150...

BMW has TV Ads ready to sell to the dealers. They will superimpose the dealers name into the Ad.
A few years ago Sierra BMW did that and as far as they could tell there no response. They have had a lot of people come in after they did some radio Ads.
I have seen non dealer BMW Ads on Speed channel but they are rare.

At the national, BMW Motorrad'ss communications manager Laurence Kuykendahl talked about a You-tube-like treatment for Xplor (http://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/common/xplorErrorPage.jsp?url=index.jsp), a section of the BMW motorrad site.

The idea involved giving each of their dealers a few digital video cameras to give to some of their best customers to go out and shoot stuff, for posting on Xplor.

He said something would be new in October, but nothing yet.

Anyone had their dealer offer them a digital video camera to go out and have fun with?

I'll be interested to see how this concept develops.

I remeber seeing a few a couple years ago. They had one with the R1200C "Crusier" stopped on some side road and then the guy hops on spinning the tire off into the sunset of a canyon road. And, another sporting the R1150GS Adventure getting all muddy then jumping into a river to wash. Can't remember it there were any other models used.

Can't remember if they were only on Speedvison also... :violin

I don't think I've ever seen a motorcycle ad on TV for anything other than a H.D. Nothing from any of the sport bike companies, and certainly nothing from BMW.

I wonder if its the location.....

I've caught a few for other brands. Mostly Yamaha "Star" motorcycles and some Honda stuff, both the VTX and Shadow lines... possibly a Valkyrie thrown in there. I think I see more of those than Harley commercials, even. I'm catching ad's at least once a week. if I remember correctly, they used to run on Discovery a lot... during commercial breaks when they were playing Biker Build Off, or "American "Family Feud" Chopper.

It makes sense that Harley teamed with a pickup truck manufacturer. I mean, how else are you going to get the bike from place to place? ;)

I heard they were also thinking about teaming up with someone who makes good walking shoes, as well! :stick

I'll bet if "any" brand got hooked up with a cell phone company like Nextel did with NASCAR they'd sell a bunch.

Anyone see the ads Suzuki has been running that show bikes and cars in the same ad.. hint hint..

Maybe Bmw should hire the agency that APPLE uses.. Very smart directed advertising

Am I dreaming this, or, did I see a TV ad a few years ago featuring a K1200LT canyon-carving two-up trailing showers of sparks from (I guess) the muffler...

The South Bend BMW dealership before they went out did some commercial inserts on the local cable channels, not just SpeedVision but also ESPN during motocross events.

You're not dreaming. I even remember the voice-over: "25 years of marriage and she's holding me tighter than ever." I also remember an ad for an F650CS featuring a guy getting a job delivering pizzas on a motorcycle.
