I took the ferry into Ludington from Manitowoc, crossed MI into Sarnia, ON and took the QEW into Niagara Falls. From there we went along the shores of Lake Ontario , Hwy 18, 250, 104, then Hwy 3 into Watertown NY and thru the Adirondacks on 3 to Saranac Lake. From there we took 86 to Lake Placid and caught 73 to Keene and at Keene got on 9N to hwy 22 and went north to Essex and ferried over to Charlotte, VT.

Also, between Niagara Falls NY and Rochester is a great road called 104. We took that on the return and it was good pavement with lots of nice little towns with mom and pop motels and restaurants. Have a safe ride.

Raub60,
I've done the ride east (to Maine) several times, and here is my favorite route I've found so far which I just returned from last Sunday night (10/1):
First get across Ohio from Detroit however you choose, but I enter PA on Route 88 in Ohio across Mosquito Lake. This turns into Rt. 358 in PA, on into Greenville PA. Stay headed east until 358 joins into Rt. 62 headed into the Allegehny National Forest. I pick up Rt. 666 (favorite road) at E. Hickory and follow that to Sheffield, PA which quickly connects with Rt. 6. Rt 6 is a great east - west run across PA, and I like to stay at the Westgate Inn in Coudersport, or camp at Colton Pt. St. Park (near the Grand Canyon of PA). I then cut north into NY on Rt. 287 (just before Wellsboro) up to Rt.15 toward Corning. One brief run on I-86 from Corning to Elmira NY,then on Rt. 13 through Ithaca, Cortland to Cazenovia. There I take Rt. 20 east to 12 north toward Utica. I stay on 12 all the way to the Adirondak Park turning on Rt. 28 into the park toward Old Forge. At Blue Mtn. Lake, NY, head north on Rt. 30 and either turn east on Rt. 28N to N. Hudson, or go further north to Malone, NY staying on 30. The decision of crossing north of Champlain or south of it, the southern route is quicker (cross at Crown Point) or the north end at Rouses Point (I've done both). If the southern crossing is opted for, pick up Rt 17 in Vermont to Waitsfield then north on 100 to 100b if you are going toward Montpelier. Rt.17 gets a little tricky over the Lincoln gap, just keep your speed down on the steep switchbacks.
You should have plenty of color left, the leaves were only hitting peak color last week in the high country. If you get into the Adirondacks, the eastern part of the park has limited services, so don't push the fuel reserves too hard if you can help it (almost learned the hard way!). Also take the gear for cold weather, it was 25 degrees in my campsite at Lake Eaton campground in the Adirondak's last Friday night, and watch out for the tourists, there are a lot of leaf peepers cruising the roads right now.
Enjoy your ride!

Just got back. It was beautiful. I put on around 3000 miles. What a beautiful country we have. I went through Ohio and PA to northern NY. I had to stay in a ratty motel because there were no rooms at any of the other places. I took the ferry over to Burlington. Rode through Vermont to NH. I could spend a week or more there, riding through the mountains. Rode down to Mass. INto Rhode Is., acroos CN. back through PA and up through OH home. Only on the interstates when I had to. I got beat up by the wind a little the last couple days but all in all it was a get ride. Man you can't beat this stuff. I am so grateful. Take care

I hope you made it tho the Kancamagus Highway (Rte 112) through the White Mountains. We rode through there last week on the way to Bar Harbor Maine. The colors were in full array.
