Hello folks,
I am interested in increasing the fuel capacity on my ’85 K100 RT. Does anyone have any ideas on auxiliary fuel tanks or ways to increase the existing tank? Plans to build my own would be great.
Thanks for help

You may also want to check out the Iron Butt site. There are lots of solutions out there.

Helen Two Wheels had a bigger tank built for her K100. Excellent craftsmanship. h2w@bmwmoa.org

The tank that Helen has was made by Ray Randoff. He would enlarge a stock tank by cutting the top off and adding a few inches of height. When Ray was done the tank would be extemely rough looking until you had it finished by a body shop.
Here is a couple of pictures of my Randoff tank. Unless someone else makes these tanks they are fairly rare. Unfortunately Ray died a couple of years ago so there is zero chance of him making anymore. Oh and the tank now holds 8.9 gals. I never even worry about range now. I just ride until either my butt hurts or I have to pee and then stop.

Tom:
It looks like an enlarged version of a vintage Ducati jelly bean tank.

Thanks for all your help. The Randoff tank looks great. I believe I can do the work myself to enlarge a tank. I need to get a tank that’s not in good condition. If I make a mess of it, I won’t feel bad if the tank was junk to begin with.

I just finished my rear mounted tank for my 85 K100RT. Replaced the rear fender with a 5.5 gallon tank, fuel pump, etc. This will likely stay on the bike most of the time. Mounts to the bag brackets and rear frame under the tail light. It doesnt seem to affect the handling in a negative way. Much better than all that extra fuel up high. I am heading out on 4800 mile trip tomorrow, so I will see how it works.

Where is your trip going to take you?
When you return if you could post more information about the tank, that would be great.
Ride safe.

2whelman,
I'd also be very interested in seeing how you built this tank. I currently have an over-the-seat aux tank, but would like to get my passenger room back.
Hope you're having a great trip, and look forward to those pictures.

I rode from KC to the Return to Shiloh Ralley last week, (A GREAT rally too!)
From there I ran up to Lansdowne, VA where I am writing this from. Heading up to Maine, and wandering down the coast to the Jamestown Rally in VA this weekend.
So far the tank is working great. Cuts my stops in half. (for gas anyway)
I will try to get some pictures out soon.
