This came from my local club's email list and I thought y'all might find it interesting:

If you are a BMWMOA member and get the magazine, you may have seen some articles written by my oldest son Joe Jr about rides, projects and product evaluations.

In August he completed a solo Ultimate Coast to Coast ride from Key West to Daedhorse, Alaska on a 1150R called the Yellowjacket. 13,000+ miles in 24 days.

He's documented the entire trip in writing and also filmed extensively. Besides the personal comments and voice-over's, he wanted to add a more exciting visual view of the ride typically captured by a separate film crew, however, that simply was not practical. So after about a year of experimentation and through trial and error, he invented a bike friendly camera mount that is very stable and allows filming in a 360 bubble around the bike. Its called the Magic Broomstick. Keep in mind that he road, wrote, filmed, edited, made graphics and otherwise produced the full video single handedly. He has a very close friend who is a Nashville musician, currently working on original music for the video.

Here's where the favor request comes in.

I am asking to have this email sent out to the Forth Worth and Dallas BMW riders email list you have. We need to get a feel for what others think of the video by registering a vote.

Below are a couple of links leading to the test footage of “The Yellow Chronicles”. The video is just under 5 minutes long.

Clicking on the link will take you to a page of videos.
“The Yellow Chronicles” is the fourth video on the list. Motorcycle Movie - Yellowjacket Chronicles - test footage 9/2006
Click on the video and it will download.
After the video plays, vote for it. In the upper right hand corner, you can vote on the video.
1 star is poor and 5 stars is excellent. Select your stars and click , your vote will be recorded.

Thanks very much for your help in advance. The BMW riders of Fort Worth and Dallas will have a hand in determining if he's on the right track.

Feel free to send me comments and critiques.

Looks like one hell of a ride. Would like to have seen how he got some of those shots since it looks like he had a camera crew with him.

Have to give that guy a tip of the hat - Key West looks a lot better that fighting for a piece of wet dirt road with a big semi.

Look forward to the finished product.

Veg, thanks for sharing.

More discussion and links to other videos are found under the section "Ride Reports". See:

Alas, very limited information has been provided on the articulating arm used to make the stand-off videos.

My post contains text explaining the camera angles. I have not seen what this 'Magic Broomstick' looks like, but the results are pretty nifty.

the dude's camera work is amazing. i'm willing to be that the magic broomstick is patentable, and would be of value to others making movies. he would be well advised to keep the details quiet until his paperwork is filed with the USPO.

as we move into a time when more of us can easily shoot and process video, we'll want to buy that kind of thing. i want one already - i'd love to be able to film parts of my rides easily and share them with my friends and family.

if he needs someone to beta test the magic broomstick on an 02 r1150r, i'm ready. :eat
