I was wondering if people coudl share their experiences with different aftermarket mufflers for their airheads with regards to how they sound and what mods if any were made to achieve that sound. I have an 88 R100rs and am thinking of changing the mufflers to either Epco Stainless or Staintune. I would like to achieve a very deep sounding rumble...not loud and obnoxious but just a very nice deep note. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a Supertrapp 2 into 1 system on my Airhead. I love it and it now worth more used, than new, since it is no longer made. I have adapted it to accept a car muffler. If you don't care about the 2 into 1 one option, you can adapt a Supertrapp muffler to your header pipes. What is so unique about the Supertrapp system is that you can adjust the sound with their disc's; this does not require re-jetting, but changes the sound. It sounds very throaty and is very unique, louder, but not obnoxious. I have received numerous compliments on the system.
If you are after a 2 into 1 system, MAC still makes that and it is readily advertised on Ebay. I also heard very positive things about MAC and they sound is a little louder than the Supertrapp.
I had a Staintune pipe on my Oilhead, but found it too expensive, sound was no real improvement and the only thing that comes to mind is that it looked good and was much lighter than stock, but at the same time not worth the extra money. Test also showed a power lost over the power curve when compared with the stock system.
Good luck with your search. Let us know what you decide and find out.

I also have the Supertrapp 2 into 1. True, it is a discontinued item, but you might get lucky and find one still laying around unsold at a supply warehouse.
The Supertrapp is very light. I like the ability to tune it by adding or subtracting discs. It is louder, a bit louder than I would like, but not ear shattering. The header pipes have a different curve from the stock headers. The right header interferes with oil changes. I have to remove the header in order to have clear access to the oil filter and thermostat. But it is not a big deal to remove it. It adds only a few minutes to the oil change.
I also had a mild porting job, added a K & N air filter and removed the air induction system and those air valves from the airbox. I think anything you can do to improve breathing will help. I found that re-jetting the carbs was necessary after making the breathing improvements.
If something happened to my Supertrapp system, I do not know what to replace it with. I got rid of the stock system. It is too heavy and too restrictive. I have no experience with the Epco system but it looks like an option if I ever need another exhaust. No experience with Staintune either. I doubt if Staintune would be my choice since they are way too expensive.

The Staintune sport mufflers were way too loud for me so I sold them off. But kept the headers crossover and box for use with BMW mufflers.

i have a complete Epco system on the /6 ....they seem to have a real problem making the header pipes ROUND where the sealing rings are. i had originally purchased them from Competition Accessories before they changed ownership. sent the first set back.......before the second set was installed i tore the bike down (out of commission for 5 mos.) and lo and behold, the second set was the same. needless to say, the new owners of CA had nothing to do with it, and Epco ignores my e-mails

Fracture:
If something happened to my Supertrapp system, I do not know what to replace it with.
My muffler finally gave out and I had to replace it. I measured the muffler inside and out and ordered a replacement car muffler with the same measurements. I had the muffler tig welded to the mount. Works great!!! If the header pipes wear out, I am in big trouble too... I think I would replace it with a MAC 2 into 1 system. I don't have to remove the right header pipe to replace the oilfilter, I fish it out. At the same time, I could not install the thermostat for the oilcooler, just not enough clearance, so my cooler is always on... But living in South Carolina, even in the winter this has not been an issue. :D :type

I have the EPCO sport mufflers (pee shooters) on my 84 r100. I cafe-d the bike so the pee shooters are the perfect look for me (and sound). Also no need to rejet the carbs. Just slip them on and ride!

Love the look of the Staintune mufflers--ends like /6 and /7 mufflers.

I definitely want to stick with a 2 in to 2 system, and I really like the stock look of the /6 /7 end caps. I am leaning towards epco for the price, although the staintune appear to be nicer in their finish. I just want to make sure the epco sound nice and deep even if only changing the mufflers and not the whole system. Anyone have experience with these mufflers without the whole system change? Thanks.
