well its odometer
well I guess its really the tripometer
the tripometer has quit working correctly,
I can reset it, all the numbers go round and round
then wont register all the time, it stops at different places, as today had to hit reserve with the tripometer showing only 56 miles ( but I know I did a bunch more then that)
but the odometer works fine
I think something broke in the tripometer, however a friend told me if it was broken, the odometer would not be correct either
thoughts ?

You've probably got the numbered wheels freewheeling on the shaft. They need to be pushed back together and then fixed from moving sidways on the shaft. This will give you some ideas:

This Airheads.org tech tip includes some of the same pictures with additional commentary.

It's really not that hard. Definitely something you can do in front of the TV in a couple of hours.

I've got the same intermitten odo problem. Is the unit the same on an '89 R100RT?

Yes, and it's probably the same problem, too. I fixed the same problem on two of my airheads, but the most recent was more than 15 years ago and I just don't remember enough of the details to give you any meaningful help. I do remember it wasn't too difficult, and I didn't have to take any shafts or gears apart.

If you print out the instruction on the airhead webpage you should be able to fix it... take your time, if push comes to shove or you don't feel comfortable you can send it off to Palto Alto and have them fix it... in the MOA magazine and Airhead Airmail there are also few other places that could fix it for you...

I am sorry that I wrote in short fragmented sentences. I did not mean to offend anyone.
I guess it comes from working where fast is good, my time is limited and text messages are soon to be a norm. But I hate text messages, is that a fragment?
I just want to get off work , and on my scooter, the long way home, is that correctly phrased.
So for others at this web-site I will try to write in more complete easy to understand sentences. I can put my questions and comments clearly and easy to understand for those that have difficulty.
Since I did not know I was writing to English majors, I should probably check my spelling more often too. I thought I was writing to people that had a common interest, BMW riders, and I was being loose and casual, like meeting at a ride in, a rally or a tavern.
Seems I learn something every day.

Yes, both bulbs, the small and big ones are available in any auto parts store.

Are they allowed to be non-german, since some question using ngk's in the bikes :laugh

I had and have the same problem. My first attempt at the fix didn't last.
One word of warning... be VERY careful with the speedo needle placement if you remove it. I must have goofed and now my speedo is out of whack by about 20kph and the both OD's stopped working after only a few days.

Thanks
do you remeber what kind of glue you used, etc, so Id ont use the same, sorry. Is anyone else haveing a short life with the repair ? The speedo shop wants 95 to fix it, and will stand behind it for a year ( was listed in August ON).

I would have used 5 minute epoxy... it's supposed to SET in 5 minutes... not last only 5...
I'd be willing to bet I didn't give the glue enough tooth or a clean enough surface to bond to.

My spedometer was slow by about $75 according to a Washington state trooper. Soon after that accuracy check the trip meter stopped then the needle stopped moving. The works were jammed to the point that the cable end was sheered off.
I replaced this unit (130,000 miles) with a new one that had an accurate trip meter and odometer, but no functioning speedometer. That one was returned for a fully functional unit. The new speedometer cost about $270

Well you're missing the question mark but I'll let you slide. :D
I personally use german steel-based bulbs. Too many failures with the crappy brass-base far east bulbs. But as far as NGKs not being allowed, they are specified for some bikes (R1100S, R1150) so I guess it's all a matter of application. I stick to the specified spark plugs and haven't felt a need to change.

sorry for the delay, I was at the campfire looking at .......passangers.......
some people smile even when on a harley.......
some things that are kind of disposable and easy to replace I dont mind putting in something cheaper
but
those instrument cluster bulbs are not easy to get to
so german based bulbs, ok, I get it
or should I say, where do I get it
as far as the locals go
its all american named, but made in...................who knows
the cheepest they can find
I dont want to pull the unit apart 6 months later
kind of like saving 4 bucks on a pressure plate
duhhhhhhhhhhh
