I recently purchased an ’02 GS. I’m a novice at bike maintenance but looking forward to learning on this bike. I’m ready for my first oil change, no dealers in this area. Any suggestions on where to order parts? Anything I should have on hand besides the filter and oil? Also any suggestions on what type of oil I might use that I can get at the local auto parts store? The bike has 19,000 miles and currently is running BMW 20-50.

I love the bike and this site has been a wealth of info. Thanks

Oil, filter, crush washer. 20/50 Castrol or the weight that works for your climate. Warm it up (preferably a ride), park it on the side stand for a bit then drain the oil on the center stand. Parts are available on most dealers websites. I'd pick one close to you to build a relationship with a local dealer just in case you need him again later.

Don't forget to buy an "old style" oilhead filter wrench.

Almost forgot, Max's, Bob's, A&S, and Seirra BMW all have on-line parts and supplies. just do google search and look 'em up.
If I were home I'd give you the links, but I'm on my PDA.

You'll find everything you need.

A&S has my vote for online pricing and efficiency. Incidentally BikeBandit.com has now started stocking BMW parts and has the microfiche too. Prices are not as attractive as A&S but service is normally excellent with that outfit.

Bob's is real close to you as he is over in Jessup, like stuff2c says it is good to build a rapport with a local, you just never know and Bob's is a class outfit.

Anything I should have on hand besides the filter and oil?

You'll need:

Engine oil drain plug "sealing ring".
PN: 07-11-9-963-252

BMW Oil Filter Wrench
PN: 88-88-6-114-650

If the oil filter is seized on, and that sometimes happens if it has been on forever (lazy previous owner), you'll note that the filter wrench pops over the flats of the oil filter as you try to unscrew it. Stop, don't panic or this'll happen...Stuck Oil Filter (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160509). Read this post (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3135889&postcount=20) on how to go about removing the filter.

Advance Auto has Mobil Extended Performance M-102 filters for $7.88 in my area, a better filter that is built like a tank! Pick up a filter wrench while you are at it. Gold Cap 15w50 was on sale also, but I like Mobil V-Twin 20w50 from Auto Zone. Crush washer may need replaced if the last dude cranked the plug on too tight. Smile for 6,000mi. :D

Wow, that stuck filter thread looked brutal. Hopefully won't have to deal with that. Thanks all for the good advice. Any one else care to weigh in on BMW oil vs. something I can buy local?

I just go w/ plain 'ol castrol GTX 20-w50 from Wallmart. In the past I have also used Valvoline VR-1 Racing oil 20W-50, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

BMW doesn't make oil.

The BMW oil you buy in the US will be different from the BMW oil you buy in Australia or Germany.

You owner's manual has the specs required.

I hope not! When and how? I haven't placed an order in a long while, so I haven't spoken to Frank in that long.

I have been happy with Max's BMW for mail order as well as A&S. I do not like Chicago BMW as it takes too long to get stuff from them

Add a few cold ones to the parts list, pick a time when your not in a hurry and have fun.

My first change went very smooth, BTW its an 05 GS
I spent about two or three hours on it.
I think I pulled the charcoal canister at the same time.

I needed one new socket to get the bash plate off. I wasnt really strong in the metric tool area. Good chance the tool kit wont have everything you need.

The only advice I would add is get a big drain pan
Its my first BMW and it was more oil than I ever saw come out of a bike.

I looked over all the vacuum lines wiring ect while I was down there. I came away with a better understanding of the bike and how good it really is.

Unfortunately I bought my bike used and it didn't come with an owners manual. Any leads on where I might get one?

BMW dealer. They are cheap enough, at least the spare R100 GS manual I bought was.

Actually, the oilheads come with 2 manuals.
