A PO of my R100 mounted a (an) RT fairing, which rattles at certain engine speeds. Does anyone know of a source for a) a diagram of how it mounts on the bike and b) how the windscreen is supposed to mount? The one I have is fastened in the middle only (might be source of some of the rattle?).

I want to pull it off and try to tighten things up, but I haven't had much luck finding information on the above topics. It'd be nice to put it back on correctly.

Any information anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks.

What year bike? It shouldn't matter too much, the fairing is practically identical for the dual shock versus the monoshock bikes. It is a PITA to remove and replace. There are six bolts that holds the fairing in place, after the lowers have been removed. Two in the side pockets (these are probably removed when removing the lowers). There are four bolts located on the inside of the headlamp area. The upper bolts have best access from under neath the dash. I removed the clock and voltmeter for better access. There's no need to remove the four bolts attached to the fairing bracket, just loosen enough to pull the fairing off. Once these are removed, the fairing can be pulled forward and off. As far as a diagram goes. Both Maxbmw, and A&S BMW have fiche online.

I hope this helps.

It's pretty simple.

The fairing mount fits to the steering head.

The four ends of the fairing mount connect to the fairing at the obvious places.

There is a crossbar that goes under the gas tank that fits to the joint of the uppers and lowers and one point on each side.

That's it.

The windshield indeed mounts in the center, but is also captured at each side by the adjuster plates.

Threaded inserts for forward fairing mounts often pull out of the fibreglass.

It's not particularly easy to remove the fairing and you should really want to.

It's easiest to just leave the dashboard in place to avoid having to remove gauges and ign switch. This means drilling out the rivets. However, no need to remove dashboard unless you anticipate separating fairing upper sections.

Anytime windshield is removed from the fairing the rubber gasket--$40--is ruined.

You'll have to disconnect the rubber fork seals from at least the fairing uppers and separate the rear fork surround section from the uppers.

You don't have to break open the brake lines, but you have to be careful with them.

Fairing removal is really not a one-person job.

Thanks for all the info . . . I'm new here (and to BMWs). I like it here already.

I had a rattle for years on my bike that I thought was from the fairing. No matter what I did I couldn't seem to locate it. What the rattle turned out to be was the grommets (sp) that hold the voltage regulator had gone bad and the voltage regulator was banging against the fuel tank when I went over bumps etc.

I got a rattle on my RS, which I thought came from the mounts somewhere. Problem was, everything was tight... was able to isolate it to the right side. It ended up being the right mirror glass. Tried to superglue it last weekend without success. I will try to take it apart this weekend and reglue the whole thing and add some gasket sealer... But check the mirrors...

BMW current retail shows as $23-$25 depending on which piece you want.
p/n as follows. Memory not clear on this, but I believe the 97/98 pieces are the early smaller style.

If they don't rattle...there's something wrong. :)

Now that is what I am talking about... If it did not make noise we would either wear ear plugs, have the music too loud or be driving a car.... AIRHEAD 4 EVER!!!
